If you can get booted into Safe mode, please post the output from EtreCheck

Thanks for your input. Sadly, safe mode is not working and I cannot get to do the resets you recommended.
Not sure what else to do. I'll have to contact apple

I do not understand why you cannot reset the SMC and NVRAM? They do not require software, just holding various keys while powering up?
It sounds like it is time to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store.

Sep 24, 2016 5:13 PM in response to BobHarrisby Steejay,When I try resetting the NVRAM, i.e., holding down the cmnd + P +R buttons, the page just stays white for very long. Nothing else happens. Keep in mind, that the original problem began with the computer shutting off abruptly.
