If I understand correctly, you updated the iPod to iOS 10 and now it freezes and goes to a black screen. It sounds like the iPod has needed to be restarted already if it goes black and then comes back to life.
There are a few things we can do to try and get it to stop doing that. I would recommend you read these articles, they may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.In order to keep your data safe you should create a backup of the iPod in iTunes or in iCloud.

Once the data is backed up we can reset the iPod to factory settings and see if the issue persists. If at that point the issue is resolved we can try to restore the backed up data.
