Q: can not use photo libraries on a NAS

Hello,

Since moving to Sierra I can not create or use photo library on a NAS.

The app crashes.

Impossible to open old libraries created by Aperture or photo on the NAS.

The app load indefinitely.

Whaen I force to quit, the system indicates that the app does not respond.

I repaired permissions etc but nothing works.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), iOS 10, null

It has never been supported to keep photo libraries on a NAS. You have been lucky, that it worked previously.

An Aperture Library needs to be on a locally mounted drive with the file system MacOS Extended (Journaled) as described by Apple:   Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library - Apple Support

And it is pretty much the same for Photos for Mac. It works best and safest, if the file system is MacOS Extended (Journaled). A NAS has a different file system.  And Apple advises against synced storage places for Photos, see:

Updating from iPhoto to Photos for OS X - Apple Support

If you store your Photos library in a location that's part of a cloud service (for example, Dropbox, Box, or Google Drive), your library might be damaged by the syncing process. As a result, you could lose photos.

To see your photos on all your devices, you can use iCloud Photo Library. To back up your library, you can use Time Machine.

Your Library may already be damaged.

To trouble-shoot it, copy it to a locally mounted drive and try to open the Photos Library there. You may need to repair the library after moving it: https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.2/index.html#/pht6be18f93

Ok but I can't even create new libraries.

In fact, the NAS is just a backup of all my photos in different files.

I use photo or Aperture just to get them organized.

On my SSD (250 Go) I don't have enough space to get the main library there: too big

No way to get it back working as before???

Ask in the Sierra forum what changed in Sierra with respect to your NAS.

The new forum is here:   macOS Sierra

I have not used a NAS with Sierra, but the system experts there may know what the problem is.

You can use the NAS to backup image files, copy your RAW files or JPEGs to a folder on the NAS.  Only it is not save to use it to backup photo libraries, because the file system is incompatible and you can lose data. A backup that may become unreadable is giving you a false security.
