Q: migrate images from camera to Photos

My brother-in-law (a senior senior!) is struggling to migrate images from his camera to Photos.  He has just upgraded his 2009 imac to El Capitan 10.11.6 from 10.6.8, so this is a big step.  He's done the conversion from iPhoto to Photos, but when he plugs his camera in, the contents open in Photos, but when he clicks to import, nothing happens.  he is about 3,000km away, so I'm the intermediary.  I use the same software and have no problem, so I'm struggling to help.

Any ideas?

What camera? Is he shooting JPEG or RAW? What does happen? Will Image Capture import the photos? If it will once they are safely on the Mac and backed up use the camera's format command to erase and reformat the card

He uses a Sony DSC-HX90V and shoots JPEGS.  However, I had a call last night to say his wife's grandson had solved the problem!  How, I don't know, but thank you Larry for your assistance.

Great - the grand kids are always the solution - unlike us old codgers (although I have taught my grand kids a few & iPhone Mac things)
