macOS Sierra - hold down power button to enter sleep mode

I recently updated my MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) model from El Capitan to macOS Sierra v10.12. Before the update, holding down power button for 2 to 3 seconds put the machine in to sleep mode. It doesn't work properly after the update. Holding down power button to enter sleep mode works only once after every start of the machine.

I know there is an option to enter sleep mode using Ctrl + Power button and then selecting one of the three options from Restart, Sleep and Shutdown, but that needs 3 more clicks and taps and is not quick. Also, irrespective of any app that is open, pressing power button worked well before the update, but now I need to be on the desktop to even make Ctrl + Power button work.

Any fixes available to this? I am missing the old way of putting my Mac to sleep 😟 I don't remember whether I did some tweak in my Mac or was it a default functionality..

It stopped working as of today, meaning the solution only worked for a couple days. I'll need to contact Apple support again to see what else they can suggest. Honestly, they should stop playing around with things here; everything was perfectly fine before with Capitan and other OS. As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hope they don't become the next Microsoft.

Same for me, yesterday I talked with a very good apple support guy. We started my MacBook from Safe Mode (and it worked). In the normal Mode it worked too...for 15mins 😉 after that it was broken again. My MacBook also still awakes by (getting a Mail or iMessages) and normally its falling into sleep again (Capitan),- that fails too. So currently I need to switch off the WiFi at night 😀 - thats very unserious! 😀😟

Next answer from the official Apple Support "we currently don't have a solution for that, we are hoping that the engineers will fix that Bug in with the next Update". One last try would be "restart the computer, while its booting, hold CMD+R to geht into the xyz Menu"..."there you need to select the second option - reinstall the OS", this should fix some problems. But I won't try that, because I don't know what will be overridden..maybe some of my settings and tools will crash.. I'm a bit shocked that nobody of the apple care knows about that Bug - and a real solution. 😕

Nope, this is also not coming. Default behaviour is 2-3sec -> sleep mode. 10sec hard-shutdown

on some configurations the dialog asks you what to do. But the topic is about getting back the 2-3 sec behaviour.

CMD+POWER is no solution for that case where you have an external (logitech) all in one keyboard(with pad) ...there you also have the power button...and don't want to push more than one key. Again, that was function which was implemented sind a loooooong time. And now its broken, its a bug, and needs to be fixed by apple 🙂
