macOS Sierra - hold down power button to enter sleep mode

I recently updated my MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) model from El Capitan to macOS Sierra v10.12. Before the update, holding down power button for 2 to 3 seconds put the machine in to sleep mode. It doesn't work properly after the update. Holding down power button to enter sleep mode works only once after every start of the machine.

I know there is an option to enter sleep mode using Ctrl + Power button and then selecting one of the three options from Restart, Sleep and Shutdown, but that needs 3 more clicks and taps and is not quick. Also, irrespective of any app that is open, pressing power button worked well before the update, but now I need to be on the desktop to even make Ctrl + Power button work.

Any fixes available to this? I am missing the old way of putting my Mac to sleep 😟 I don't remember whether I did some tweak in my Mac or was it a default functionality..

I have managed to speak with Apple and only suggestion over above SMC reset etc that we have all tried is a full re-install from scratch with no Time Machine restore to check if problem is resolved. Then re-install again with Time Machine to recover my configuration. Restore all my content from iCloud and optimise my Apple Music and Photos. I will not be getting 8-9 hours of my life back. Will let you know how i get on........ come on Apple get rid of these basic bugs, this is what Windows users have to do when the OS fails........

I have tried to do a clean installation of macOS Sierra on my secondary laptop as I wanted to perform a clean setup on that device anyway. I did not restore anything from TimeMachine as I was keen on installing everything from scratch.

This did not help, the laptop exhibits the same behaviour - i.e. it works fine when pressing the power button after rebooting the machine (and goes to sleep); however, the power button doesn't respond anymore after a while (unless you press it for too long and it forces your laptop to shut down). Of course, as you said, I have performed the SMC reset and NVRAM reset (presumable this doesn't help, but I thought I should reset anything I could reset myself). I hope this helps.

same problem here - MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), MacOS 10.12.1

In addition, at least on my mac, the "Restart / Sleep / shutdown" dialog that comes up on pressing Ctrl-Power or Fn-Power does not come up with keyboard focus, so pressing "S", "R" or "esc" doesn't work until i click the dialog, defeating the usefulness of the quick dialog and doing something unexpected in the window below.

Additionally, Ctrl-Power often doesn't work the first time I press it.

This is sort of absurd. First they eliminate the ability to choose what the power button does (i used to have it set to bring up this dialog - which is actually what i prefer), then they mess it up so it doesn't even work properly anymore. This is basic functionality for those of us who like to learn how to work fast instead of having the choose things from a menu all the time.

I was having a hectic time for a few weeks - then out of frustration - I entered a DVD and I awoke the machine... it want back into problems soon after then finally getting it to reboot by holding the power button after 24-48 hours of sleep - got it to boot. After that - I've simply do a terminal SUDO reboot - with a couple hiccups but no real issue, just have to leave the button alone.

I have spoken to several people at Apple Support and on every occasion they say "1st i have heard of this problem"

Can all people Chat or Call Apple Support and also submit a Product Feedback. My problem is that it is now out of support so am struggling to get any focus other than a reload which will take 8-9 hrs and will most probably achieve nothing.
