Q: macOS Sierra - hold down power button to enter sleep mode

I recently updated my MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) model from El Capitan to macOS Sierra v10.12. Before the update, holding down power button for 2 to 3 seconds put the machine in to sleep mode. It doesn't work properly after the update. Holding down power button to enter sleep mode works only once after every start of the machine.

I know there is an option to enter sleep mode using Ctrl + Power button and then selecting one of the three options from Restart, Sleep and Shutdown, but that needs 3 more clicks and taps and is not quick. Also, irrespective of any app that is open, pressing power button worked well before the update, but now I need to be on the desktop to even make Ctrl + Power button work.

Any fixes available to this? I am missing the old way of putting my Mac to sleep I don't remember whether I did some tweak in my Mac or was it a default functionality..

Hello, I am having the same problem, power button doesn't work to put my iMac to sleep. Anyone from Apple Support that can give us information about this issue and when we will have an update for MacOS Sierra.

    Thx.

    Try Command+Option+Power button

This is how to sleep for Macs with CD drives but for some reason it's the case with the power button as well.

I have an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and have the issue after updating to macOS Sierra.  Pressing the power button once to put to Mac to sleep simply stopped working.  Please fix this bug.

Now it happens on both MacBook 2016 and MacBook Pro 2012, so it is an issue with the OS. After a while the power button stops working, it is not a problem on the MacBook 2016 as I can just close it, but the macBook Pro has an external Monitor attached, so it does not go to sleep when I close it.

Same issue..holding down the power button for 10 seconds is a hard shut down.

Ctrl + Power is working but not very usefull. Why is it not possible to set the keys in the apple settings (like on linux, windows etc.).

ps. Rebooting several times isn't working at all. After some sleeps it's not working anymore.

    All,

I have had an online chat with Apple Support and they appeared to have resolved the issue. Open a Terminal session and enter the following

defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem -bool yes

It works for me so good luck

works for the moment, lets see if it works for longer (after some sleeps or reboots)

Thank you for this suggestion but would be better if Apple fixed the newly created bug.  Really do not want to press multiple keys to put my laptop into sleep mode, especially since the functionality existed in a simpler format for El Capitan.

Definitely! I don't know why Apple isn't answering to that topic any more.

Btw. the terminal command wasn't helpful. After two sleeps its broken again .

So please Apple - fix that soon!

I came across this problem too. I contacted Apple support and he told me to do this:

Power on the computer and immediately hold down the Command, Option(Alt), P, and R keys until you hear the startup chime twice. You'll then log in as normal and that fixed it for me. Hope it does the same for you!
