Is iOS 10 compatible with iTunes 12.2.2?

My MacBook is ancient and the latest Mac OS I can run 10.7, which means the latest iTunes I can run is 12.2.2. This used to work with my iPad Air no problem, but has never worked with my iPhone SE that originally came with iOS 9.

I don't often sync the iPad with my MacBook as it backs up to iCloud, but I wanted to put some audio tracks onto it. I tried today and it isn't working. I'm receiving an error message, "iTunes could not connect to the iPad “******'s iPad” because an invalid response was received from the device."

I get the same messages with my iPhone SE. My guess is now the iOS 10 update has made my MacBook even more obsolete by not being able to sync with my iPad. I've searched around and can't find any system requirements for iTunes concerning iOS 10, so I'm not 100% this is the case.

Is there a fix for this? Or is my guess correct, that iOS 10 is not compatible with iTunes 12.2.2?

Also, if it's not compatible, if anyone has any workaround of how to get music from my MacBook onto my iPad (I've noticed Amazon Music allows me to upload tracks and then download them onto my iPad, but with a limit) then I'd appreciate it if you could share!

Thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5), null

Here are the technical specs for the iPhone 7 which shows what the requirements are in order to sync an iOS 10 device.

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

  • Mac: OS X v10.9 or later
  • PC: Windows 7 or later
  • iTunes 12.5 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)

Unfortunately, if your Mac is too old to upgrade to Mavericks, then you are out of luck with regard to syncing with that computer.

You can search the Internet for alternatives to iTunes. I don't use any of them, but there appear to be a number of them out there. I would not want to steer you in the wrong direction.

See Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support for the invalid response error.

I've had an iPhone 6+ running iOS 10.0.1 connected to iTunes 12.1.3.6 on Windows, but there is no telling if Apple will remove compatibility with a future update.

iTunes Match would allow you to download to your iPad over wi-fi music that you add to your iTunes library, without needing to make a direct connection.

Did you upgrade over the air direct from Apple rather than with iTunes? There were reports with iOS9 and now with iOS10 that people who upgraded over the air were still able to use older versions of iTunes. Of course it is too late for anybody who has already upgraded and it is a bit of a gamble to depend upon being able to do that.

It might work on OS X too. The "invalid response" message indicates a connection problem, and can occur when the builds are compatible. Typically when they are not you will get a message along the lines of "<device> cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes" or some such. It may be that all you need to do is resolve the connection issue.

Yes, OTA upgrade. iTunes 12.5.1 seems to be the minimum requirement to install or restore iOS 10, but backing up to iCloud would guard against problems that introduces. I actively downgraded to 12.1.3.6 to test the potential for compatibility with Windows XP and Vista since that is it the last version that runs on those platforms.

I have been seeing this "invalid response" things in the iTunes for Mac forum a lot over the past couple of days and for some reason that is now the message you get when you try to connect a device that has been upgraded to a computer that does not have the newest iTunes. Usually after people upgrade it disappears, but of course this is only if you can upgrade. Otherwise you're stuck with what you can do through iCloud syncing, etc.

Thanks for the further replies. I checked the link you originally gave and tried everything there, and I'm still receiving an "invalid response" error.

I also did the update over WiFi but that doesn't seemed to have helped.

It's too late to contact Apple support to find out if there is a fix. Although it's been mentioned previously I still can't find anything from Apple directly that iOS 10 requires a certain iTunes, rather just system requirements for the various iPhones, iPads, etc.

I know it's an iPad. Nonetheless, Apple's stated minimum requirements for syncing a Mac with an IOS device running iOS 10 is still iTunes 12.5 on a Mac running Mavericks at minimum.

My daughter has an iPhone 6 running iOS 9.3.5 and her Mac is running Lion 10.7.5. She is not supposed to be able to sync that phone with her Mac. The minimum is supposed to be Mountain Lion 10.8.5. However, she can and she does sync with that Mac, because as Limnos suggests, my daughter always updates OTA. She has not updated to iOS 10 yet, so I don't know if she will continue to have success.

tt2 knows mor about iTunes than I ever will, so I take his word for all things iTunes. If he says it will work in Windows, then I trust his knowledge. I doubt though, that you will be able to sync with the Mac at this point.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a similar situation I was in. My iPad Air has always updated OTA for as long as it's been available, I've only ever synced it to get music on and off my device. It also synced fine with iOS 9 but now I'm having problems. I'm presuming it's iOS 10 and that's been the only change, but it could be something else. Luckily it had no music on there before this as I wouldn't have been able to sync it and get rid of it!

Did you do it directly from Apple or did you do it using wireless syncing with iTunes? Either way, if it is now telling you that you need iTunes 12.5.1 that is what is needs. I doubt taking it to a Windows computer running an older version would make any difference, it seems to be something encoded in the device itself which cannot be reverted. If you can use iCloud features you can still do a lot with the phone using that interface as a go-between.
