Q: Time Machine not working after Sierra update

The time machine function of my Mackbook Air 2011 stopped working...it has not backed up since updating to Sierra, all it does is take hourly screen shots, it will no longer back up to my external hard drive like it used to.

There is no problem with how it is set up or the hard drive it's self as my iMac is working perfectly fine since updating to Sierra and it is backing up via time machine to the same hard drive.

This is a hard drive and set up i have had in use for about 5 years with no problems.

Also since updating to Sierra i noticed my MacBook Air gets hot and the fans run wild even though there was nothing one or running other than the system it's self.

I lost use of my built in camera after updating to El Capitan and now i have lost the use of time machine...wondering if i should go back to Yosemite as everything worked fine then!..is this possible?

Thanks for any help with all this!

I wasn't sure i was able to follow whether or not you got this resolved. i am having the same problem with time machine ever since the sierra install. my situation is a little different i that i can get an initial backup done (about 24 hours to complete), then no incremental backups will save.

I did get time machine working again, had to remove a couple of items (sophos and rapport)...never got to the bottom of why no camera since yosemite update, or what was causing the safari and photos issues, still disconnects wifi too.

It may be you have some third party software that is not yet compatible with Sierra as i did...even my kodak printer will not work as the drivers/software are not compatible with Sierra.

thanks!  looks like sophos may have been the culprit for me.  i was able to replicate both working and non-working states by installing with/out sophos. the messed up thing is that once i install sophos, it kills time machine. i can't just use the removal tool. i had to go through a full install of the OS without sophos in order to get time machine working again.  wish we knew why and had a way to fix it without using such a blunt tool to fix.

Yeah, i had to do a full reinstall of Sierra to get things up and running again, just removing Sophos wasn't enough.

Glad you managed to get sorted.

Sorry to hear that. Sophos is capable of causing so much damage to a system that a reinstall is sometime necessary.
