Q: 12 inch Macbook (2016) overheating with lid closed

I purchased a 12-inch Macbook (2016) just over a month ago. I have always kept my past Apple laptops on overnight with the lid closed (in sleep mode). I've never had a problem. Within a week of owning the new Macbook, I woke up in the morning to find it extremely hot. The computer had shut down. About a week later, it happened again. It seems like plugging it back into power and opening the lid helps to cool it down and allow me to turn it back on. When I look at Activity Monitor, it seems like Safari has been the biggest culprit of power consumption in the past 8 hours. Since those two occurrences, I have now shut down my Macbook overnight and anytime I know it will not be in use for extended periods of time and not connected to power. Gratefully a Macbook starts up so quickly. What is going on? Is there something else I can try so I can leave my Macbook on and closed and not connected to power? Is it faulty?
