Gnarlodious

Q: Change password

How do I change my password to this site? I looked all over, my profile, preferences, spent a lot of time looking, and there is nowhere to change my password.

Please be aware that I am referring to discussions.apple.com, NOT idmsa, iCloud, daw.apple.com, developer, appleid.apple.com or any other Apple subdomains. I am registered as Gnarlodious on this support website and want to change the password for that username.

No suggestions on how the issue might be resolved? If they cannot fix the legacy account would it not be possible, for example, for them to change the username on the current account so that you could free it up for use with your main Apple ID, and then transfer your points to the new account?

Yes, that would be ideal, merge the two accounts by any means possible. I’ve done my share of database programming and I know any problem is solvable.

I’ve been fighting with this problem for about 8 years now and am tired of it. Its the reason I stopped coming to this website to help people with their Mac problems. I apologize for being so bitter and grouchy, but this just seems like ironic punishment for all the Apple evangelism I’ve done for the last 20 years.

Well I've posed the question to the PTB. Hopefully they will come back with a positive response.

I did get a reply stating declaratively that “Apple IDs cannot be merged”.

The plan isn't to merge the Apple ID's. If I understand you already have one that works properly, but it doesn't have the Gnarlodious username attached to it here in ASC. If they can put that username on the working email address based Apple ID and transfer your points wouldn't that work? You could then abandon the legacy account and use the Apple ID instead.

No, that would not work because Apple accounts cannot be merged. I did however suggest that one account be deleted totally which would leave me room to update the Gnarlodious account without email collisions, etc. That way I could retain my current reputation and username on discussions.apple.com and all the rest is just work to fill in all my iCloud stuff, ITMS etc.

    Hope its possible.

I had a legacy account too.  It wasn't through AOL, however.  Somehow, I got it converted to a new Apple ID.

I recommend that you have separate apple ids.  One for you purchases and the second one for forum usage.

The host do have the ability to change your asc user name.  Not sure if that would be helpful.

PS.   These forum are -- in all respects.

I agree with your PS which was hyphenated out.  These discussion boards should be studied by usability experts as a exercise in what not to do.

    OK.
I forget whether I have suggested this before

    Define terms:

    • Apple ID = an email address* + password
      * "Legacy" allowed different
    • Places
      • Apple Stores
      • Forums
        • discussions.apple.com (ASC)
        • developer.apple.com
    • User ID accounts (separate databases with possibly with common credentials, if using ONE Apple ID for them)
      • Apple Stores
      • ASC
      • Developer

(forgive me if I am preaching to the choir)

ASC uses JiveSoftware that has its own User Database. I do not know about Developer subdomain doings.

Database "tables" can be edited/saved directly by someone with "permissions" to open them up as spreadsheet-like tables - circumventing some "console" interface by an admin or webpage submit by the user

Let's assume that the MAIN database is the Apple Stores (likely) users - that's how you "Change your Apple ID - Apple Support". Then, the two user databases for ASC & Developer need to "talk" with AStore database to 'update' their respective user databases when called upon.

Here is the problem = the ADMINs for ALL 3 databases are different folks! Apple Store is one department, ASC is the Hosts here - Developer is unknown to me, but surely yet another.

If you followed the path > Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security, you have been talking with "Account Security Team" (Stores). Whoever you talked to was "unABLE" (no permission) or unWILLING to edit the Database TABLE.

    QUESTION:

How many times was your call TRANSFERRED before you were flatly told we cannot fix this?

If a low number, you may not have reached the "WILLING and ABLE" level of specialist.

The Hosts (email correspondence?) can only change ASC username - JiveSoftware Admin Console.

Since you mention you worked with computers, many computer programming language use -- to mean subtract one.

I  was informed that what I want can’t be done, I guess I am expecting the impossible to have only one Apple ID. This means on this page:

Apple ID - Official Apple Support

where it says “Creating an Apple ID is easy. You only need one to sign in to all your Apple services.” is a lie, that in fact I need two, and will need two forever and for all time. Apparently as punishment for using this website so long ago.

It also means I am forced to use two different browsers due to incompatible cookies that cause an error when I go to discussions.apple.com in a browser that is used to my real Apple ID. This is actually why I stopped coming to this website years ago and helping people with their Mac problems.

I think it is best to have separated apple ids.  No use exposing your apple id with a credit card behind it more than you have too.

You can use seamonkey and firefox at the same time.  I used a separate browser for my web browsing for awhile.  I no long do this.  I use Keyboard maestro to assign function key presses to my important apps.  f4 is firefox.  f5 is seamonkey.  When ever I need to edit my canned user suggesting, I can press f5.

Finally I am able to log in to ‘Gnarlodious’ (this account) without cookie collisions between browsers! I had to abandon my other Apple ID account that I had since about 2007, which is about when the cookie collision problem started. I had to switch over iTunes and iCloud to my new Apple ID (which is actually years older) and relogin with iPhone and other devices.

Wht a total headache this has been! Some things don’t work. I expect to take a big hit on my ITMS songs which will now refuse to play. Also, all the apps I bought which will refuse to work.

The weird thing is, the person in the email I have been discussing this with recommended that I continue using 2 different Apple accounts! They seem to be writing words without really understanding just how involved it is, and ignorant to all the hidden gotchas that pop up when using 2 IDs. Sorry I have been ranting about this but after 9 years of  fighting with it maybe the misery is over.

I wish someone had told me back in 2007 when I started an Apple account that I already had one.

Sounds like there has been some progress. Family Sharing might be able to sort out issues with access to the old iTMS content.

This problem has been solved. Sort of I guess. Unhappy with what I had to do and it was a lot of work but the password problem was resolved.

    Few things that don't work:

    1) I have been unable to get Notes iCloud syncing to work with the new Apple ID account. My MacBook is unrecognized by my Apple account page, even though other apps are syncing normally.

    2) The nickname Gnarlodious I had for commenting on ITMS can't be used by me as a different Apple ID:

    Screen Shot 2016-09-29 at 9.19.32 AM.png

    along with other minor failures.

This whole episode has really turned me off to Apple. I really see it now as just another rigid dictatorship, the result of which is to force me into a little box. I originally migrated to Apple to escape the little box, but now they have surreptitiously built it around me.
