Mail program issues

I was moving items from inbox to folders and accidentally created a "smart folder." Next thing I know, I've got almost 3000 messages in my inbox (started with less than 1000 and was trying to clear it out). I deleted the smart folder,but all these messages remain in inbox. Help! Thanks.
