Q: I still have to type my password after I've enabled unlocking with Apple Watch.

Well, I've done everything right. Or at least I think so. But for whatever reason, my mac still asks me for a password to unlock. As I open the lid, I get the "Unlocking with Apple Watch" message. But it just prompts me for my password after.

Is anyone else facing something similar or is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Ok... It started working on my MacBook. Just randomly. I haven't done anything different from the last time. I did restart my apple watch. And then shut down my MacBook and restart it again. So, yes it just started working. For no apparent reason.

But on my iMac 5K, it still says it can't communicate with my apple watch. So, yeah. that's that.

Mine also spontaneously started working on my MacBook this morning, without my having done anything other than let it to sleep overnight.

Miraculously and unexpectedly, the Watch now unlocks the MacBook Pro every single time!

    Really weird.

Me, too! The watch opens the MacBook Pro all the time now. It did it first thing this morning--made me jump!

    Hi

Note that the instructions for setting up Auto Unlock include:

    • "The first time you log in after you turn on or restart your Mac, log in by entering your password manually. After that, Apple Watch logs in for you."

Jonathan, what we were experiencing was not a one-time need to enter a password. I did note the instruction you quote and every other instruction in the setup guide. It simply would not work yesterday. (It would actually say that it was unlocking with the watch, but then would prompt for the password anyway. Repeatedly. Tried several times yesterday putting in the password, putting it to sleep, restarting, etc.) Don't know why it's working now, but it does not relate to the instruction you quote.

Update: My Watch no longer unlocks my Mac. I had the feature for approximately 8 hours, and now it decided to stop working again.

Do you have any Bluetooth devices connected to you Mac? I was having the same issues with the unlock feature, then I noticed the Bluetooth symbol in the menu bar was showing it was paired (three dots through the center of the symbol) even though I had nothing paired with my laptop. I opened Bluetooth preferences and deleted the two devices listed there that had been previously connected, but were not currently connected. After deleting these items, the Bluetooth symbol returned to its normal unpaired look, and the unlock feature started working 100%.

I then tried experimenting a little. First, I paired my Bose speaker. 100% failure, required my password every time. Next, I unpaired the speaker and paired an Apple Magic mouse. This resulted in about a 50% failure rate but always worked when I clicked cancel then tried logging back in. I have not tried any other devices or multiple like a mouse and keyboard.

It took forever to get my " Allow apple watch to unlock your mac" check box to work. I was so excited it finally worked after restarting two factor authentification. But it still would not unlock the mac. After trying everything I almost gave up but then I got it. Under System preferences - Security & Privacy - The setting for "Require password ________ after sleep or screen saver begins" has to be set for immediately. If you have any time in there the watch won't unlock the mac.

    Whew!! finally

dgturc83, you nailed it! Earlier--when it wasn't working--I noticed the three dots on the Bluetooth symbol, but could not figure out why (none of the devices on my list indicated "Connected"). I just thought "Hmmm. Weird." Later on, the watch started to unlock the Mac every time I entered the room! I looked, and the Bluetooth symbol was indeed in the unpairedmode. I still don't know what was engaging the Bluetooth earlier, but at least I know what caused the unlock function to fail.

    Thank you so much!

Yeah, I had that all figured out initially, so that wasn't my problem. Turns out it was a Bluetooth thing in my case! Thanks to dgturc83 for pointing me in the right direction!
