Q: 'incorrect number of threads'

iMac quit unexpectedly. Upon start up, progress bar keeps stalling and then shutting down the computer. 'Disk Utility' and 'DOS' both show "incorrect number of threads" and are unable to repair. Any ideas?

iMac, iOS 10

It seems like the HD has failed. If you are running in 10.7.x or later boot the computer into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and open Disk Utility and run first aid on it. If first aid fails, the next stop is to take the computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be professionally diagnosed and repaired.

As long as you have a good backup, it should only be an inconvenience. You may want to consider installing a SSD rather than a mechanical HD. An Apple Store will not perform this upgrade however most Apple Authorized Service Providers will.
