My Reminders badge stuck at 1 in macOS sierra

I have a '1' badge on my Reminders app in macOS.

I have no outstanding Reminders and the badge is not showing on any of my iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) nor in iCloud.com. Unsyncing Reminders in my iCloud preferences removes the indicator but as soon as I turn it back on the badge reappears. I have deleted all my completed Reminders and spent some time replacing all my scheduled Reminders and yet the badge is still there!! I cannot find a Reminders preference file to delete in the Library. killall Dock has no effect.

There must be some corruption connected to my iCloud account that only affects Reminders in macOS but how can I get this fixed? It's driving me nuts. Disabling the badge slightly defeats the purpose.

I wonder if this is related to the version of the problem I had with iCloud Calendars and Reminders. There was an unchecked setting in my Calendars, which was preventing notifications about changes to Shared Calendars from appearing in the notification centre. I put have just posted that answer here:

Re: Reminders App Badge Notification Stuck

It made me wonder if this had exactly the same effect - if you used any shared calendars, perhaps this resets the notifications?

[ This may be quite a stretch! ]

After spending far too much time trying to fix this, I seem to have fixed it (for me at least)!

I tried restoring Calendar and Reminders data from a previous time through iCloud.com setting. This didn't work but it did flag that Calendar and Reminders seem to be related in iCloud, and perhaps the issue was Calendar related.

This then expanded my search to Calendar issues and I eventually stumbled on to this support page iCloud: Advanced Calendar and iCal troubleshooting - Apple Support. I worked through the steps, although I only did a local Calendar Archive rather than exporting each calendar. (If it happens again I'll be sure to export each calendar separately as well as I lost some recent appointments, although I think it was my fault as I had been messing around with my calendars previously.)

Double-clicking on my Calendar Archive in Finder replaced/restored all my Calendars and Reminders and more importantly, restarting iCloud syncing did not see the return of the dreaded '1', so this worked for me. 😀

I got the same issue yesterday after I upgraded my iMac to the MacOS Sierra. I wandered all across the web to find a solution to my problem. Here is what I tried to fix it:

POSSIBLE SOLUTION 1:

1. Open the Reminders app.

2. Go on the Search bar and enter 1 letter, e.g. "c".

3. Continue entering one letter from your keyboard until you find that reminder.

Outcome: Didn't fix my issue. I didn't get any results on my iMac and on www.icloud.com

================================================================================

POSSIBLE SOLUTION 2:

1. Open Siri.

2. Tell Siri: "Show me all my reminders."

Outcome: Didn't fix my issue. Siri told me: "You don't have any reminders."

================================================================================

POSSIBLE SOLUTION 3:

1. Open the Reminders App.

2. Go in the menu and choose Reminders -> Accounts.

3. Uncheck the "Reminders" app from the iCloud account.

Outcome: It removed the badge, but didn't fix my issue. It's a workaround and additionally it stops the synchronization of your Reminders app in the iCloud.

I checked my Calendar app, too but couldn't find anything there. I will try to execute the action plan provided by bobthebilder and see whether it will help.

Anyways, Apple should fix this bug in macOS Sierra.

I have this same issue after upgrading to Sierra on my iMac. My iPhone and iPad don't show the '1' badge.

If I turn off 'Reminders' in my iCloud account the '1' badge will go away. So it appears to be related to the iCloud some how.

I attempted the archive and store steps that from the above post but it didn't help me.

I have multiple list (maybe 20) in my reminder app. I am considering deleting them one by one and see if I can find the problem. But I was hoping for a simpler way.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

The difficulty is that there are solutions to clear the incorrect badge (fiddle and they take time) and they work (for me anyway) ... BUT NEXT DAY IT'S BACK AGAIN!! Maybe a different incorrect count.

So you end-up doing the fiddle fix on a regular basis.

Reminders should not be this bad.

Do Apple do any testing these days because their software quality has really plummeted.

I simply created a new iCloud account and this badge disappeared. I don't have the nerves to deal with it on my previous account. I tried doing everything possible, including a clean install of macOS Sierra. Nothing helped. It's good that I haven't used any of my iCloud space, so it was ok for me to transfer to a new account.

Somehow Apple disappointed me with this issue, because one of the solutions I tried was to call them and report the problem. They told me on the phone that they will escalate the issue and reply back, but guess what?... Still no reply.

In my case, it seems to be incrementing each day (or periodically). So I reset it and then sometime later noticed it was up to "1". Today I see it's gone up to"2" (and no reminders have reached any Due or Alarm time. Also, no notifications "gone off" so clearly the Reminders application does not actually think any reminders are overdue/alarmed.

Kind of makes Apple Reminders useless and still no fix (and this bug must have emerged ages ago (I can't believe it's just a few of us). And I don't use Reminders much in that I have only 7 reminders and no new ones in the last month, none deleted and none reached their scheduled due or alarm dates.

I have finally gotten my annoying '1' badge to go away. I was reading another thread about this topic.

They said to go to www.icloud.com. From there you can do a restore of the 'Calendar and Reminder' from a backup.

I picked the most recent one because I didn't really know what else to do. When that was finished the '1' badge was still there.

Last night I rebooted my machine - to play Fallout 4. Now this morning the '1' badge is gone.

I can't say for sure this will work for everybody but it is simple and worth a try.

Fingers crossed it doesn't come back like some other people have reported.
