My computer will not recognize my iPod at all, among other issues.

When I plug my ipod into the USB port of my computer, my computer will not recognize it at all. The Apple screen comes up briefly, but goes into the charging screen and it freezes. Also, the longer I have the iPod plugged into the USB cable, the hotter the iPod gets. I am unable to restore it or reset it. Please help me!
