Q: Processes APPNOS and APPTS are eating up my RAM and making my computer very slow.

Hello, I have an iMac (late 2012) 2.7 Ghz intel core i5 with 8GB of RAM. Lately my computer has been extremely slow, and basically unusable for the past 4 days. After numerous times of shutting on and off, I was finally able to open Activity Monitor after around 25 minutes of loading. I was shocked to find that the processes APPNOS and APPTS were consuming 13GB of RAM each, with a total of 27GB of RAM being used even though my computer only has 8GB of RAM. I force quitted the two processes and my computer was running normal again, however these processes keep coming back every time my computer sleeps. I hope someone knows what these processes are and how to stop them from popping up or eating more RAM than I have.

For what its worth, updating to macOS Sierra from El Capitan did not do anything.

Thank you,

NMitchem

You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.

Navigate to the following folder, and post its contents in a screenshot.

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

To open that folder, copy the entire line above and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field. It should look like this:

Take a screenshot showing all that folder's contents, and post it in a reply. To take a screenshot read the Appendix in the following User Tip: Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question.

There will be additional instructions to follow.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware.

Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.

    Hello NMitchem,

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what adware is installed. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

If adware is installed, EtreCheck will help you remove it, although you may have to supply a password. If you aren’t comfortable with that, just post the EtreCheck report here and other helpers can tell you exactly what files need to be deleted and how to do so.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.
