Q: Blown-Out Video Bug on iPad Pro?

I watch a lot of video in apps on my iPad Pro 9.7" and I've noticed something vexing. No matter the source (Netflix, YouTube, Lynda), after a few seconds of watching, highlights in skin tones in the video will gradually get brighter and brighter until it looks as if the video is WAY overexposed. If I tap on the video to bring up controls, the highlights will return to normal and then gradually blow out again in  a few seconds.

These are professionally created videos, which are not overexposed (I verified on my Mac and TV). It seems especially bad in talk show scenarios where one head is in view for a long time. I tried screenshotting the issue, but the resulting photos do not show the blown highlights.

I've tried:

  • Turning off auto brightness
  • Turning off true tone
  • Restarting

None of those worked.

This happened on iOS 9 and 10.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM

    Hello Modern Pixel,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding you've been experiencing an issue with video quality on your iPad Pro. I watch videos on my iPad regularly. I can see how it would be distracting if the image quality doesn't appear as expected. I am happy to help.

You've done a great job with the steps taken so far! At this point I recommend resetting all settings. This takes all settings back to default, including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, alerts, notifications, brightness, wallpaper, and sounds.  Even though no content is lost with this step, it's a good idea to back up first. Use the link below to assist with backing up.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once you've successfully backed up, reset all settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

    Have a great day!

    Resetting unfortunately didn't work.

I've also verified that this does not happen with my old iPad 2 or iPhone 5, but does happen with my iPhone 7. I'm thinking it's related to the new DCI gamut.
