Q: missing "Add to Bookmarks" in Safari 10/macOS Sierra

After clean install macOS Sierra, I could not find "Add to Bookmarks" in Safari 10.0 (12602.1.50.0.10). It only shows "Favorites" as shown in the following picture.

As yet, nobody seems to have come up with a way to get it back, but you can create a bookmarks folder, and folders within that. These will appear as an option where your "Facebook pages" folder currently is.

If you don't wanna scroll down to open the links stored in your folders each time, open up the bookmarks menu and drag and drop the folders to the top - under favourites... or wherever you want them to be.

Whilst you are in the bookmarks menu, you can delete folders (or bookmarks) which you don't want.

There is a video of the process a few posts up in this thread.

Same problem here...I use the "Favorites" toolbar for a preset selection of links, so the missing "Bookmarks"(NON-folder) selection is a big problem!  I was used to "bookmarking now" (no folder) and "organizing later".  Hopefully gets fixed/worked out.  On the positive side "Favicons" are back...w/o the need for Simbl and Safari Stand.

Wow I never seen such a long Thread for a simple problem.... here's what I did... Kill all your Bookmarks... then Clear History .. Select "File - Import From Google Chrome" ... that's a rap... now both my Browsers are synced with exactly the same Bookmarks... I use Chrome for Work... Safari for Home.. and both at the same time when I'm Wired!

Probably doesn't fix the problem or any bugs present but I was able to get back to work and avoid reading 4 pages of conversations here.

Yep, we're all still able to add bookmarks. I drag mine to the bookmark list. The problem is this is cumbersome and slows down my workflow. I rely on shortcuts. Apple lets us customize them b/c they do speed things up. Thanks for the additional workaround though.

I love Apple, but these are the type of things that "updates" cause that drive me crazy... hopefully a update soon will bring this back... I understand adding new "features" in updates, but it shouldn't break simple functionality like this that many of us have gotten used to!... does anyone even find Top Sites useful ?... how hard would it be to have an option to create a customizable homepage with just text links (not these huge screenshots that are a waste of real estate) ???... I create my own in wordpress and it works great as a homepage... see screenshot... simple and effective...

I have same the problem, on Safari 10 and MacOS Sierra. Many people in this thread don't understand the original post and their replies are not helpful. Let me try to explain more clearly.

Favorites are the bookmarks Safari shows in the browser above the tab bar. Nobody uses Favorites for all their bookmarks! It would create too much clutter. The majority of bookmarks are filed *outside* of the Favorites folder. If you select "Show Bookmarks", a window allows you to edit and organize bookmarks and to create folders separate from Favorites. You can even drag individual bookmarks to the top-level, not inside any folder. Bookmarks and Favorites are not the same thing.

If you don't want a new bookmark to be filed in Favorites or in any other *folder* in the bookmarks, that means you want to file it as an unsorted bookmark. For many years this was easily accomplished by selecting the "Bookmark Folder" in the Add Bookmark dialog. The new bookmark would be added at the top level, not in any folder. The new bookmark could then be easily re-selected by clicking once on the Bookmarks Menu and navigating to the botton without traversing any subdirectories. "Bookmark Folder" was a misleading name because it was not a folder, it put the new bookmark at the top level as shown in the Bookmarks List. Despite the misleading name it was very useful and the only way to get new bookmarks added to the top level from the Add Bookmark dialog.

In the recent Safari 10 release, the "Bookmark Folder" option disappeared from the Add Bookmarks dialog. This makes it impossible to use the Add Bookmark dialog to create an unsorted bookmark at the top level.

If you select Show Bookmarks and display the bookmarks list, you can still manually move any bookmarks out of the subfolders and into this unsorted bookmark area. Safari still supports it. The problem has to do with the Add Bookmark dialog leaving out the option for this.

I'm glad somebody filed a bug report and I hope they fix it.

In the mean time, I found a work-around. I never like to use the sidebar feature of Safari, but if I select Show Bookmarks Sidebar under the View menu, I can click in the URL location box and manually drag that to the sidebar. This allows me to create a bookmark at the top level without using the Add Bookmark dialog.

I hope this workaround is helpful.

Yes, but now you have created a folder and manually dragged it to the top level, when you go to "Add bookmark" or CMD +D, hey presto, your new folder is there along with Favourites. This means using the sidebar ONCE and never again.

    That's not correct.

As I made clear, no folder is created by the workaround I described. The new bookmark appears outside all folders at the top level. This has the same result as the now-missing feature.

Seems some people are experiencing different bugs, in that case.

Am on the latest Safari 10 and the "add bookmark folder" option remains intact, as you can see below...

    Screen Shot 2016-10-02 at 4.01.58 AM.png

    Screen Shot 2016-10-02 at 4.04.46 AM.png

Now, obviously placing it in a top level folder is not quite the same as just adding "Add to bookmarks" as in the past, but it does mean that the dialog you get from the drop down menu or from ⌘ D now looks like this:

    Screen Shot 2016-10-02 at 4.07.17 AM.png

I expect someone adept in Terminal will come up with a solution soon enough. Meantime, report the issue you are having as it may not be the same as that already reported.

Another "workaround" I am trying:  I created a new "Unsorted" bookmark folder and moved it to the bottom of my bookmark folder list. Once you select it and bookmark a link in it, Safari defaults back to it every time you "Add Bookmark" or "Cmd D".

It is almost as if the Apple overseer has decreed: "You should have NO bookmarks outside of folders!" (Or maybe it is truly a "bug").

That was my original workaround.. After doing that I found that I could open the Bookmaks list window with Show Bookmarks, and drag the bookmarks out of the Unsorted folder and to the top level. Then, those bookmarks appeared in the Bookmarks menu, without having to traverse any subfolders, at the bottom of the Bookmarks menu. Just like the previous 10 years of Safari. The default behavior of saving a bookmark was always to this top level, unless you went out of your way to select a folder which it would then remember. So I hope it's a bug, it's reasonable for people to ask why this feature has changed.

Please allow me clarify: The "Bookmark Folder" option disappeared *for some users*. It is some sort of glitch, not a change in functionality. While of course affected users should provide clear feedback to Apple, it is worth emphasizing that we are not talking about functionality that was removed. It may be a bug, or it may be a conflict with other software, but Apple did not somehow decide to remove this!

I don't think anyone was unclear on that point, Luis. We know it's a glitch. I am also glad someone filed a bug report. Hopefully a fix is coming soon.

And for anyone who doesn't want to read all the replies, here's the problem in pictures:

Default bookmark folder available right below favorites

    fullsizeoutput_725.jpeg

    No default folder

    Screen Shot 2016-09-23 at 4.15.15 PM.png

My current work-around is just to click and drag. Small bug, but looking forward to a fix.

Got the same problem, the only solution that worked for me was to add a bookmark using my iphone (it automaticaly adds it to your mac and other devices if they are sincronised).

Or also(the better solution) what you can do is just add a website to favorites or any other bookmark folder, then go to "edit bookmarks" and just drag out the bookmark that you want to have outside folder.
