Trying to print from Safari PDF but can't see any page numbers

I have just opened a 700+ page PDF document in Safari and need to print odd pages here and there but I can't see any page numbers displayed when I scroll through the document. When I display the same document on an iPad the page numbers change as I scroll through but on my iMac (using Safari 10) they don't appear at all - and 700+ pages is a lot to get wrong! Any clues how I can switch on 'Display page number'?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

The default Apple PDF Internet Plug-in used by Safari does not show page numbers (unless these are in the footer of the viewed PDF), and there is no setting in Safari preferences to enable this feature. Your best bet is to download the PDF and then open it in Preview or Acrobat Reader, where the thumbnails will correlate to page numbers. Then you can select multiple, arbitrary thumbnails using the command key to print those selected pages. In the Pages section of the print panel, you select “Selected Pages in Sidebar.”

The PDF Internet Plug-in installed by Adobe Acrobat Reader or Pro will display the current page, and page total in its rollover panel. If there are page numbers in the footer of the viewed PDF, they will not be suppressed. You will have to enable the Adobe Internet Plug-in from Safari Preferences : Security panel.
