Random OS freeze or hang after Sierra Upgrade

Since upgrading to Sierra, I've begun experiencing random freezes or hangs of the operating system.

Generally, I retain control of the mouse (connected via trackpad), for at least some period of time. However, only movement is possible -- apps can't be selected, there is no response to clicks, etc. Attempts to switch via cmd+tab produce no results.

I've tried waiting for the system to respond. It eventually slept, then crashed with a wake on sleep failure.

The other response is a hard reset, holding down the power button until a restart is forced.

I've run disk utility in rescue mode, and it reports no problems with the disk. I've not yet tried some of the more esoteric responses like resetting NVRAM and so on...that's probably next. I saw one media report that indicated this problem was happening with El Capitan, and there was no resolution. I'm not sure if this is the same problem carried over, or a new one.

Just for record, started experiencing this issue after upgrading to macOS Sierra v10.12.4.

Sequence of issues leading to a complete freeze:

1. Dialog boxes start appearing with black fill no buttons or text visible inside.

2. Drop down menus start appearing transparent. Clicking on them works but can't figure out much because of 1.

3. Drop down menus start showing images of applications which are already closed.

4. On mouse over the dock bar, it just shows the name of the application in focus with huge space between the previous and next icon in the dock.

5. Trackpad becomes unresponsive, tactile feedback stops.

6. Keyboard backlight is on but none of the buttons respond.

7. Only way out is to hard reboot by long pressing the power button.

The following workaround worked for me.

Credits to Re: macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

1) close Safari.

2) In the Terminal app, enable the debug menu of Safari by executing this command: defaults write com.apple.safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

3) Open Safari and in the debug menu go to "Drawing/compositing flags.

4) Choose "disable canvas accelerated drawing" and "disable full page accelerated drawing".

MacBook Pro-15”, Late 2016 macOS Sierra 10.12.2 Chronic Freezing and Spinning Beach Ball

Using Thunderbolt Display and Lacie 1 TB external hard drive for Time Machine

I had constant freezing problems to the point that I couldn’t even log in on some start ups. Constantly having to force restart, the computer had been rendered completely unusable and I struggled with a variety of solutions for three days until finally this combination of items seems to have solved my problem. No freezes for the last week, hopefully this may help others.

*Restored macOS Sierra from Recovery Mode. backups.

*Deleted all Log-Items (opened those items manually after log-in)

*Changed default browser from Safari to Chrome

*Started up with lid open on laptop, logged-in with lid open then after log-in completed closed lid to go to Thunderbolt Display

*Moved all peripherals ie. printer, keyboard, external drives connected to Thunderbolt Display directly to MacBookPro

Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 13 In Retina. Since Sierra, Random Freezes... even on Guest account. Reboot. Launch Pages, Freeze.... wait for 90 seconds... everything works again. I can do this more or less on demand... Reset all the PRAMs and whatever else support put me through....

The freeze isn't a hard freeze. Sometimes I can still move my mouse or alt tab to another app. But the dock freezes for sure. I put my mouse on top of the frozen open dock and when the dock disappears is how I know my mac has come back from a coma.

This may be unrelated.. but to be honest, I think this issue has to do with video drivers... I have had a lot of graphics wonkiness since the upgrade. Random graphics issues also especially with MS Office apps like Excel where huge blocks of pixels fail to redraw.

If I could go back to Capitan I would have.. but I didn't do a time machine backup before upgrade.

Hi all,

No change with OS X Sierra update 10.12

I perform Apple Hardware Diagnostic yesterday. the short one and the long one (1 hour!!).

ALL IS WORKING ! ZERO DEFAULT !!!

I also perform test with non official diagnostic tool (TechTool) and no graphic default.

This is definitely a software issue.

For remember : My MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2010 freeze randomly to the reason of "GPU Panic"

Jan 17, 2017 2:38 AM in response to Dale Gardner

15" rMBP Late 2016 (2,6Ghz, 16GB RAM with touchbar). Random freezes. However, freezes seem linked to use of touchpad, particularly the expose view. If I use the three finger gesture to enter expose view I sometimes get the freeze. Then I'm unable to get out of the view, yet each app will continue to work within the expose (so I'll have lots of miniature windows with Excel, Chrome etc and they all work...). I can't exit it. Restarting Finder makes no difference. Sometimes i can open new apps using CMD+Space but the new apps don't respond to the mouse or keyboard. Reboot is the only option.

Jan 31, 2017 9:15 PM in response to Dale Gardner

Yes!

I tried replacing ram chips. Sent the computer to the apple store 2 times. Once for several weeks.

I took the computer to a certified MAC repair center and paid for private service from mac experts that have been servicing apple machines since the first one came out.

My computer passed all tests and HD video etc.

Finally I decided it was a hard drive failure and installed a new drive. Things seemed smoother and fixed. WRONG!

This is a software issue and its caused by Safari. Since I have quit using Safari I have not had anymore symptoms. ***** - because I like the idea of being able to use anything I want when I want to.

I am mac 2010, sierra OS, 12 GiG ram, New 1 TB hard drive by western digital

Started locking with same specs but with OEM samsung hard drive @ 500gb.

IT IS SAFARI AND ITS INCREDIBLE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM. LOSING THEIR MOJO?

Come on Apple, your better than this!
