Q: MacBook won't shut down correctly

Hello,

my MacBook Pro Retina 13" 2013 won't shut down correctly after I installed macOS Sierra.

It takes about 20 minutes after clicking n shut down. The display is black and i'm missing the shut down animation (that little loading circle). After a long time the circle appear and it takes 10-20 seconds (the normal shut down time) to shut down my Computer.

For me it seems like there is a programm or a task that can't stopped correctly.

How can I see which programm slowed down the shut down process?

Thank you for your help!

You have some 3rd party software running that is causing the issue (Safe mode does not load any 3rd party software), so run a report using this and post it here, we'll try to track it down. There will be no personal information in the report

Based on the EtreCheck report my reasonable guess would be that it's the Paragon software. This has happened before with Paragon software such as VHD mounters (or NTFS read/write drivers) and a simple Google search can reveal that.

The only other software not loaded that stands out was the Xbox 360 Controller Driver.

I am running Office 2016 and Adobe Creative Cloud (which has all those other extensions) without issues.

It is possible, though I very much doubt it, that it's HWMonitor. I would advise checking on Paragon first followed by the Xbox 360 Controller Driver as I know Microsoft doesn't make official drivers for Mac meaning that's some third party XInput driver.

    I had this problem too.

For me, the reason was MySQL. Somehow it can't shut down easily.

Once I force quit mysqld and disabled its automatic start, everything is normal again.

    Hello,

I think I will do a backup and then reinstall Sierra. I have also a copy of Snow Leopard on a CD, I will try to make a clean install from this disk and then upgrade to sierra. After that I try to get back my data from a backup. Is it a good idea to do so, or do I get the same problems because the problem causing application is in my backup?

    What do you think guys?

Is there a good way to install Snow Leopard (deleting the partition on which it is installed? (Do I have to delete my Windows partition to? I don't hope so)?

I know it is impossible to Install an older OS by simply put in the CD and click on run (For any reason apple disable the function. Why?)

I hope you can help me.

    Hello,

the problem is solved. I don't know exactly the problem, but it ist one of these 4 programs (xBox 360 controller, MySQL (it starts together with my computer), HWMonitor or Paragon software) that don't let my MacBook shut down correctly.

I unistallend all of them and it seems that the problem isn't solved, but 3-4 shut downs later my Computer runs without any problems. It shuts down very fast, but this animation (loading circle) isn't there anymore (maybe apple disabled this animation with the update).

I hope this discussion will help other people too.

Thank you guys for your awesome help and quick response.
