Q: siri macOS sierra does not hear me

I am using macOS Sierra with the internal microphone selected. I have tried several different input volumes but when I click and try taking to Siri the line to show the she/it is listening does not move at all. Any suggestions to fix this? I have used the phrase "Check my e-mail"
