Sep 25, 2016 3:48 AM in response to adam79by Eau Rouge,Best thing to do is try it out. If you have an external drive with a large amount of space you could partition it
so you can install the new OS to it. Once downloaded the Installer app should start and when it asks you which disk you want to install it on select the partition you made on your external.
To check if your third party apps are compatible you can check here https://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx
use the search field on the right to locate your apps.
Once you have downloaded Sierra, and before going ahead with the installation, look in your applications folder for Install macOS Sierra.app, make a copy of it for safe keeping.

Sep 25, 2016 11:44 AM in response to adam79by FatMac>MacPro,Unless you've already downloaded the El Capitan installer, it's no longer available so your only option is Sierra.
Before downloading and installing the Sierra installer, I'd suggest you spend some time looking through the Sierra Community. Check out the posts, note the proportion reporting problems, and also note how many posts are just from today.
