Download and instal OmniDisk Sweeper to help you find the larger files and folders.
Always make sure you have valid backup before starting any project such as this.

Sep 25, 2016 1:04 PM in response to Kaiulani10by freedom4hd,You need more room! The longer you wait, and continue to ignore the error, the greater your risk for data loss or disk corruption, ultimately resulting in a total loss (if you don't have an up-to-date backup). So here are a few options:
1. Upgrade your main hard drive to a larger one. (OWC has great prices on new hard drives)
2. Move your less-used files to a portable hard drive (or migration package available through OWC)
3. Install a disk doubler device into your optical drive as a secondary storage drive, transfer your files onto that and install a new hard drive or solid state drive as your main disk
4. If money is an issue, then you MUST CLEAN UP your main hard drive before it's too late!!
- You could start with iTunes to remove duplicate music, or all versions of the same song except the oldest.
- Use a (third party) duplicate file manager to remove redundant or multiple copies of files starting with the larger sized.
TidyUp is the only one I can suggest, as I've used the free beta version in the past, although the free version is no longer available.
As a digital packrat, I always struggled to keep enough open disk space on my 2010 MBP 2.66 i7. Every file I had saved throughout the years on multiple PC computers were spanned over multiple CD/DVDs, hard drives, (and later, cloud drives). Needless to say, I was overwhelmed with an abundance of copies, from music, photos & documents to backups, zip files and lists, some being more than quadruplicates. What a mess! TidyUp automated the entire cleaning process for me, and allowed me to continue saving my precious backups of outdated crap from the past 20 years!
I can’t speculate on Tidy Up's paid version currently available today, but several years ago, my search for an affordable, yet viable solution was fairly quick, as the beta version of TidyUp appeared to be the only free duplicate file management software available for Mac that was simple to setup and use, yet powerful and thorough enough for what I needed. I assume that the paid versions currently available are even better than the one I used, and surely there are plenty of other third party apps out now as well. Specifically, an application named Gemini has been widely recommended in forums, from what I’ve read.
