Q: Sharing ethernet port 2 on a Mac Pro Server (Mid 2012)?

At the moment I backup my MBP using Time Machine on a Mac Pro Server (Mid 2012). This is all done over a relatively slow wireless router.

Am I right in assuming that I can directly connect my MBP to the second ethernet port on my Mac Pro of if enable Internet Sharing (System Preferences > Sharing) using ethernet 2.

I assume that this does not have much of a performance hit on the Mac Pro Server?

You'd be better off using an ethernet cable and plugging the MBP in to the router.

If this is not possible, then I'd plug it in as you suggest, but you shouldn't need to enable Internet Sharing. Just make sure that ethernet is active on both macs. They should then self-assign IPs in the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range. You should be able to mount the TM share point on the MBP (using Connect to Server cmd-k) using MacServerName.local as the address.

Connecting to the router would be obvious choice but in another room...  It is an old router and can not cope with the number of wireless connections.

I have gone the internet sharing route and my MBP is flying! I am looking at a new router and when the price of the ASUS RT-AC5300 comes down...

Ah, I assumed that you would have the Server wired to the router.

    Glad it's working.

Apologies, I should have mentioned that server is connected via ethernet (a very long cable!) to the router...
