Q: look up three finger tap doesn't work in “Preview”

Hi,

after upgrading to macOS Sierra, the "Look up with three finger tap" (to use dictionary) doesn't work in Preview (but works fine in Safari, iBook etc).

Is there anyone facing the same problem?

My machine is —

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Also, previously in the Trackpad settings there were visual presentations (like using fingers & hands) to show how a specific setting works. But in macOS Sierra visual presentation is gone and there is a still-picture (showing a boy eating something while standing in a relaxed mood ) on every settings, for example:

Is there anyone facing this problem too?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12), 2.8 GHz Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    Solution:

Go to System preferences => Trackpad => Check the box next to "Lookup & data detectors".

    Done.

Thank you very much for your reply.

However, that's not a solution actually. Maybe you haven't read my post carefully. Three finger tap is activated in my MacBook and it works fine in Safari, iBook etc but not in Preview.

The same problem here, with a little difference: I've tried force touch and tree-finger touch to trigger this look up function, while none of them work when using Preview/Skim.

This is really annoying when I'm currently doing a lot of reading but to have take use of workarounds repeatedly.

Hope Apple will be at least be careful about the functions users really care about.  Force touch lookup has been unstable from the day it was born, and after a year severe problems still happen. Not to mention AirDrop and many other functions, which have been in unstable states for many years.

    Absolutely same problem!!

I hope fix the three-tap thing soon, too.

As a temporary workaround: for me, two finger clicking on the trackpad does open a contextual menu from which I can choose lookup. Not as fast, but workable. (Strangely enough, only two-finger clicking works; the supposedly equivalent control-clicking does not!)

Yeah exactly, I also do a lot of reading and actually this three-finger tap thing was my most favorite function of MacBook. But unfortunately it was gone with the upgrade I guess I will stop upgrading from now on. It's no use.

btw, do you also see the visual presentation is gone? and there is a still-picture (showing a boy eating something while standing in a relaxed mood)?

    Hello Tariq,

    Sorry about your problem.

It seems to be an issue with non-availability of the dictionary content in your dictionary app. Open dictionary app from Launchpad in Dock. Once you open the dictionary, it will prompt you to download the default dictionaries (American & British Oxford). Accept and wait until the download gets done. Once it is done, you will then be able to see the dictionary results in Look Up wherever you are.

I don't know what seems to have caused this or why Apple has removed the dictionary content from macOS Sierra installer. Since there is a work-around, I didn't mind.

(My previous post was for another question in another community. However, I am unable to delete it here since 15 mins have passed. So sorry for the irrelevance here.)

    Hello Tariq,

Seems Preview needs some improvement. Meanwhile, you can turn on three finger 'drag & drop' in assistive features for trackpad and use it to just drag and select a word in preview and then use the two finger tap to bring lookup and then check the word's meaning.

This is by no means a work-around, but a simple way to do so by not taking the hand off the trackpad or clicking it down and selecting the word as such.

Don't know how much this helps you, but I've grown accustomed to this. Maybe you will too. Cheers.

Hi.  I'm not having the same issue as you, but my options are different:
