Q: look up three finger tap doesn't work in “Preview”

Hi,

after upgrading to macOS Sierra, the "Look up with three finger tap" (to use dictionary) doesn't work in Preview (but works fine in Safari, iBook etc).

Is there anyone facing the same problem?

My machine is —

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Also, previously in the Trackpad settings there were visual presentations (like using fingers & hands) to show how a specific setting works. But in macOS Sierra visual presentation is gone and there is a still-picture (showing a boy eating something while standing in a relaxed mood ) on every settings, for example:

visual preview trackpad 2.png

Is there anyone facing this problem too?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12), 2.8 GHz Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Yes I am doing the way you said, two finger tap to bring lookup and then checking the word's meaning but I hope Apple will fix this three-finger tap thing for Preview soon, I miss that a lot!

Surprisingly enough, I can see in the Trackpad seetings that the visual presentations is back! Now it shows using fingers how different functions work. I don't know what was the problem before and how it got fixed automatically!

However, the three-finger tap thing in Preview still isn't solved, and I hope Apple will fix it soon.

Same here. I have tons of foreign-language materials in PDF. I need Look Up & Data Detector available in Preview desperately! I just tested. "Look up & Data Detector" works fine in El Capitan or any other previous releases, but fails in macOS Sierra. It seems the software engineering team forgot to enable related API in Preview.app. Or they might just remove this function for performance consideration. But I really hope macOS Sierra can have the same "Preview.app" as El Capitan. I am considering downgrading to El Capitan if this problem cannot be fixed.

I hope so. But meanwhile it's quite long since last release. There's still no move on macOS Sierra. Reckon apple just ignore this "insignificant" problem.

Would they really remove such important function from Preview just for performance consideration? I think most likely they forgot to enable it in Preview.app, as you mentioned.

I miss El Capitan too, I wish there was a official way of "downgrading".

Actually this three-finger tap dictionary thing was my most favorite thing in . It made my life way easier.

Yes previously I saw there were frequent updates immediately after a release, but this time . . . .

Clearly it is a bug, but if you miss El Capitan you might not recall that Preview in El Capitan gobbled up huge amounts of RAM just by scrolling back and forth along a document. Some bugs were fixed, and alas some new bugs were introduced. That is just a fact of life in software development. It will be fixed eventually. 10.12.1 has not come out yet.

For the moment, at least there are workarounds.
