    Hey nealfer,

I understand that your new MacBook Air is booting to a prohibitory symbol after trying to set it up. Let's go over how you can fix this so you can enjoy your Mac.

The reason you are seeing this is that your Mac is having an issue with the startup System Folder. This could have happened while you were setting it up or migrating data. The good news is that can be fixed by reinstalling the version of macOS or OS X that came with your MacBook Air. Take a look at the information below that will explain the screens upon startup. It also has a link to walk you through the reinstallation steps.

    Prohibitory symbol

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

If you're using your Mac at a school or business, it might be trying to start from the wrong version of OS X. Contact your IT department for more help.

If this is your personal Mac, try reinstalling OS X by using OS X Recovery.
