iOS 10 video playback stops working until reboot

I have an iPad Mini Retina, and ever since upgrading to iOS 10.0.01, a short period of use causes all video playback to stop working.

Videos in Safari, Chrome, YouTube etc. appear to cache (progress bar at the top saturates), but will not proceed to play. The first frame of a video is displayed, but solely as a static image. I am able to change the static frame being displayed by scrubbing to any point in the video, but playback will not take place.

The only thing that allows video playback again is rebooting the device (force-closing apps, locking and unlocking etc. does not help).

Hi, Sunkai!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, I understand that you are having trouble playing videos on your iPad mini; the video will begin but will get stuck as a single image, as if buffering, and never resumes (at least until you restart). I predominately use my own iPad to watch videos, so I know it's important that they actually play; I'm happy to help!

I've got some troubleshooting that I can offer for you. Before you get started, create a backup of your iPad using iCloud or iTunes, following the instructions here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have your backup, try the following steps, in order. Test a video after each step, and stop when the issue is resolved.
  1. Make sure your iOS software is up to date. Within the last week, iOS 10.0.2 was released. Use the following article to get help updating: Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  2. If this occurs on Wi-Fi, try restarting the network you're using from the router and/or modem (if possible). If it's a private Wi-Fi network (such as your home network), try removing all devices from the network, then adding just your iPad back.
  3. Try a different network.
  4. Reset the network settings on your iPad under Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will not affect any personal data (like your pictures, contacts, Calendar events, etc) but it will remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, any previously used APN or VPN settings, and any paired Bluetooth devices.
  5. Restore your iPad to factory settings, following the steps here: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory settings

After the restore is complete, set the iPad up as a new device (meaning without using the backup you created earlier, at least temporarily). You can sign into iCloud, iTunes and App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime with your Apple ID. Then, test a video.

If the issue is fixed, you can restore your backup per the information here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

Have a great day!

Hi,

I have contacted apple through the chat on https://getsupport.apple.com They have checked if it is a widespread problem but they do not have it labelled as a widespread problem. They need a minimum amount of people to report the bug in order for it to be considered.

I would recommend that you go there and report it. You can use the video that I linked at the end of the discussion here:

A bug in all versions of iOS 10 (video and audio playing) (See all discussion)

Hopefully they will declare it a widespread problem and thus look into it, since it's obviously a problem with iOS 10

You counted 86 different users on March 2 in the Apple forum but that doesn't nearly represent all the users that are encountering this very annoying problem. Incidentally, almost 2000 people are reporting this problem at this link: iPhone 6 can't play video in ios 10. I have also reported this problem about six months ago, here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple.

I am using iOS 10.2 (14C92) and this video issue has existed since v10.0. Additionally, I know at least seven other Apple users also experiencing this problem.

Since I know that it doesn't affect all videos, it is possible that a specific video type or encoding is the root of this issue and therefore, explains why many others are not reporting this issue.

I have this same issue on my iphone 6. It started around Christmas. It is all videos I have recorded as well as app videos (news sites, etc). The only fix is to restart every time. It happens across ALL wifi locations. We shouldn't have to reset our phones wifi and bluetooth connections to make this basic function work in an update. SO VERY FRUSTRATED!

I have the same issue with a new IPAD Air 2 - I am on on my 3rd IPAD in 6 weeks and they continue to stop playing videos in every app and I have to restart. I have contacted apple support and they have referred it to the engineers but I don't hold out much hope. The only thing it could be is a bug in IOS 10.2.1 but they are in no hurry to do anything about it.

I've had the same issues since I got a new iPad Air 2 for xmas, been online for weeks with support and have got nowhere. Just had to send a video of the problem and a diagnostic download to the engineers. Just get the feeling nothing will happen and they are not acknowledging the problem. I only hope iOS 10.3 has a fix. Not impressed with how apple have dealt with this. There is another link in this forum to the same problems with new iPhones and that's now at 8 pages. Go to apple to support to log this problem and maybe they will do something useful. Just talking about it here won't get much done.

I have an iPhone 6s running iOS 10.3.3 and a brand new iPad Pro 10.5 also running iOS 10.3.3 and both have this same issue on my home wifi, work wifi, Starbucks wifi, McDonald's wifi, my mums and Nan wifis, my best friends wifi, 4G and 3G . So, having done all the fixes you suggest on both devices (one of which is only 8 weeks old and has had this issue since I got it home), what actual solution do Apple have please as it's frustrating the life out of me! And with the in car shut out that's rumored for iOS 11....a google phone is looking really appealing right now!!

Many thanks

Bev
