Yahoo search engine in Safari even though Google is selected

Safari uses Yahoo search engine in spite of the fact that Google is selected in preferences. This was a problem a couple of years ago and the solutions were incredibly complex and a I am not sure they would still apply. OS X is El Capitan 10.11.6. Would upgrading to Sierra solve this problem?

Try disabling all Safari extensions in Safari/Preferences/Extensions. Test. If it works, turn on extensions one by one until you identify the problem.

The only extension it had was Search Genius and when I disabled it then looked up something google search appeared.
