Q: Editing 4k with FCPX... Time line fractioned and very slow

Can anyone help.

I understand that I should buy a new iMac to be able to edit 4K. Apparently my graphics card is not powerful enough..... Right now, I cannot afford a new iMac.

Can anyone suggest tips as to how can I edit two projects with what I have got???

I recently bought a new 4TB external hard drive to be able to edit these two projects. Each project is over one hour.

I have already created two new libraries that take about 1.5 TB... leaving 2.5TB free.... I gather it should be enough to do the editing?

Well the time line continues to jump and break and I have tried deleting caches, cleared preferences and move practically everything away from the computer´s hard drive.

I have 219 GB free which should be enough...

What year model is your iMac?
All drives, especially the system drive, should always have at least 15% of its capacity left as free space.
What codec are your clips in your Libraries?
Is your external drive Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 (make/model)?
What version of OS X and FCPX are you using?
How much RAM is installed?

I will reply accurately on Thursday from my studio, where I have the iMac.
OSX Yosemite 10.10.5
Late 2012
3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
24GB memory 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB
Yes, all my drives have a minimum of 30% free if not more.
I do not know the codex.
My drivers are Samsung and Seagate

From what I remember, 2012 was the first year iMac got a USB 3.0 port. That should be OK on your system.
Go to the Apple menu (top left), to About This Mac, click the System Report button, select the USB section in the left hand column. Verify you have a USB 3.0 port there.
But, are the external drives themselves USB 3.0, or USB 2.0?
Are the disk drives inside the RAID enclosures 7200rpm?
In order to do smooth video editing, you'd need USB 3.0 port on your Mac, USB 3.0 drive enclosures, and 7200rpm drives inside those enclosures.
USB 2.0 is absolutely unacceptable for video editing, and next to impossible for 4K editing.

You have a USB3 bus on the computer but the backup and the Samsung are USB2 devices. You get USB2 performance. You get the lowest speed of whatever's on the bus.

What's the Cruzer Blade? Looks like a USB hub. Shut down the system. Disconnect all the drives. Connect your media drive, whichever it is, directly to the computer, then check system info.

I have checked the specifications and it says
Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop 3.5 inch External Hard Drive
All my 4k material is in 3.0 USB drives.
