call blocking feature not working on iOS 10, iPhone 5c

Hello,

Recently I noticed that call blocking feature is not working after upgrading my iPhone 5c to iOS 10.0.1. Problem is seen even on 10.0.2. My another handset iPhone 6s plus works fine.

I go into messages >> more info on sender >> Block this caller. After selecting this and blocking, still the phone says "Block this caller".

I cross verified this in my "Call Blocking and identification" and the number doesn't show up in the block list.

Anyone else facing the same issue on iPhone 5c or older models?

Thanks

iPhone 5c, iOS 10

I have found the root issue of this. When i blocked my SPAM contact, with quite a few hundreds of numbers, the Call blocking & identification screen won't load at all. So the workaround for this is to unblock this contact, get into the settings, phone, call blocking & identification screen, and then re-enable truecaller to get rid of my spam callers. After that i just block again the contact and voilá!

I found a fix for my phone, although I suspect it’s only a temporary fix. I couldnt get into Call Blocking & Notifications on my iPhone 6 plus because when I clicked on it, the settings screen would freeze and do nothing. I could close settings and go back into it, but it would never go into the Call blocking settings. At the same time, TrueCaller became disabled (after working for about a month) and since I couldn’t into the Call Blocking Settings, I couldn’t re-enable it. I did a soft reset of the phone, removed TrueCaller, etc but none of it worked. In a last ditch effort, I did a hard reset after removing TrueCaller and backing up again. Once it was back up and restored, with no TrueCaller, I checked and still couldn’t get into the Call blocking settings.

Finally, I was scrolling through my missed calls and noticed an entry labeled SPAM, which was there from when TrueCaller was originally installed, when it was still working. It wasn’t deleted when I uninstalled TrueCaller. When I opened it, it had hundreds of numbers. These were the numbers that TrueCaller was blocking. I unblocked that contact, which unblocked all the numbers. It had so many numbers, it slowed up the phone to the point I couldn’t use it for a minute or two, while it unblocked them all, but then viola! I could get into the Call Block settings again. At that point, I was able to unblock every number I had blocked manually, outside of TrueCaller and start fresh. I’ve reinstalled TrueCaller and was able to enable it in the Call Block Settings and its working again, but since I suspect the issue is caused by too many blocked numbers, I’m sure when it fills up again, it will be back to the same issue, but that tells me it’s nothing we can fix. Apple has to fix it on their end.

I previously opened a ticket with TrueCaller and they said they were working with Apple on the issue, but that was months ago, so I’m going to add these notes to the ticket and also send a note to Apple. I’m sure the issue will not be permanently fixed until Apple removes the limit on the amount of blocked calls a phone can have.

One caveat I forgot to mention: unless you're using some sort of third-party spam detection app, I wouldn't suggest unblocking all the numbers you've blocked previously, like I did. Since TrueCaller is really good about catching spam calls, I didn't mind doing it because TrueCaller should catch most new incoming spam calls since I was finally able to re-enable it, but if you don't have a spam detection app and you unblock the known spam calls you've previously blocked, you'd just have to start all over again with blocking numbers.

I am now on 10.3 and a 6s, and call blocking is BROKEN. Help! I have reset all settings and I have wiped my phone and started from scratch..... not fixed..... errrr.....

Since iOS 10.3 is beta, this is not the problem venue for you to report issues. You need to report this via the app for beta issues. They cannot be discussed on the public forums.

I'm on 10.3.2 iOS and iPhone 7, but this problem has been around for a few iOS versions. My blocking seems to work except for local numbers in my area code. I have Truecaller and it seems to work fine. I have added these local numbers to Truecaller though and neither my iOS or Truecaller block them and they are able to ring through. Anyone have advice since I don't see  responding to this thread? I do know that these local numbers are calling for money for charities. Thanks

I have the same problem on iPhone 6+, 10.3.3 and I called apple about the problem. They eventually said to do a factory reset and do backup before I did the reset. GUESS WHAT - NONE of that worked and apple seems to be unawares of our consistent problems and offer us to RESET almost always especially when they either don't know a answer or don't care. Not sure which side of the fence to fall on anymore. I am sure apple wants to keep breaking sales records but maybe not too concerned with customer care at a point after a launch. If anyone has a solution to Call Blocking & Identification please find a way to help us all.

Apple will not respond here. This is a user to user support forum, and Apple does not participate.

I have just tested my iPhone 7, on iOS 10.3.3, and call blocking works just fine. I blocked my home phone number, attempted to call my phone and it would not ring. Just went to voicemail, and I did not receive any notification whatsoever.

I then unblocked the number and tested, but found it necessary to power the phone off and back on again for me to be able to start receiving calls from the home phone again.

I absolutely know apple does not, will not nor wants to know nor reply to anything on this USERS forum. Never has, never will. Congratulations on your iPhone 7 accomplishment, I applaud your success. I on the other hand still have a iPhone 6+ and if you read the other post about Call Blocking & Identification option there are several other pre iPhone 7 users asking please for help. I don't think having to buy an iPhone 7 is the best alternative at this point in time. I wish you continued success with your 7.

Thank you for responding, and I wonder, since you post seems to be dripping with sarcasm. However, if you see, I was not responding to you, but to the user before you that was using an iPhone 7. At no time did I recommend you purchase an iPhone 7 as an alternative.

I do not have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus to test with, nor do I know anyone that has one I could use. Seems that Apple provided you with the standard user troubleshooting tips, restart, reset, restore from backup and restore to factory. If you restored the device to factory, then tested the call blocking feature before adding any additional content to the device or using your backup, I could not provide you with any further troubleshooting tips. I could not explain the issue with your device.
