    Hi there, Connwayne!

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I am understanding that the Back button in your Messages app doesn't seem to respond as expected. I definitely want to help make sure everything works as expected.

I've got some troubleshooting I can recommend. Before getting started, make a back up of your iPhone following the instructions here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, or Pod touch

After your backup is created, try the following steps, in order. Test after each step, and stop when the issue is resolved.

    1. Quit the Messages app as described here: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    2. Restart your iPhone following the steps here: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    3. Reset the settings on your iPhone by going into Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won't remove any personal data (like contacts, pictures, Calendar events, etc) but it will revert customizable settings (like your wallpaper and screen brightness, alert sounds and ringtones, Date & Time settings, etc) back to factory defaults. It will also remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, as well as any previously used APN or VPN settings.

    4. Restore your iPhone back to factory settings following the steps here: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to factory settings

Once the restore is completed, set the iPhone up as a new device (meaning without using the backup you created earlier, at last temporarily). You can sign into iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and iTunes and App Store with your Apple ID.

If the Back button works as expected, you can restore your backup using the following article: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from  a backup

    Cheers!
