I want to restore my old 2009 iMac and give it to my daughter. I tried using the tips in other threads without success. When I restart-it doesn't give me the "disk utilities" option. Now what?

What OS is installed on the computer? Unless the OS is 10.7 or above, there is no Recovery Partition.
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot off the DVD that came with the computer or a Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.
When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.
You can upgrade from there. The article below suggests what needs to be done.
