So I tried Disk Utility and got this message:

"2016-09-25 22:37:27 -0500: Disk Utility stopped repairing “Darwin”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

None of the files can be backed up, fortunately all the files still exist on the computer except of course all of the backup files.

The backup disk is about 3 years old, is that a normal lifespan for a Western Digital My Passport for Mac 1 TB portable external Hard Drive?

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition. Then erase/reformat the disk. Then copy the backup back to the drive.

Lifespans of hard drive can vary. A relative's computer hard drive failed after 2 years. I suggest you get another hard drive and use Time Machine to back up to both drives. Hopefully, that way you will always have a backup.
