iMac running HOT after Sierra install

Has anyone had a problem or noticed that their Mac is running hot since installing Sierra?

Also, 2 days ago I had a notice that I had run out of application memory and iTunes and Safari were paused. There wasn't any applications running overnight and I've got 20 GB's of RAM and it showed that 18.86 GB's were in use. I had to basically force iTunes and Safari to close and than reboot the iMac to free up the memory and be able to access the computer.

Never had these issues before Sierra was installed. The iMac never ran "hot" (was over 121 degrees last night - had to shut it down to cool it off).

So if anyone has run into any of these issues or knows a fix I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Sal

Fix Sierra Installation

Try each of these in order. Test to see if the computer is working properly:

  1. Reset the PRAM
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volumeentry from the the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and returnto the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  5. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.

Please read Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support.

Spotlight indexing can take a long time after installing an operating system upgrade: If the fans on your Mac notebook computer run after you migrate data - Apple Support. If your Photos library contains thousands of photographs, it will take a long time for the upgraded Photos app to analyze your library.

To identify the apps or processes that may be burdening your Mac, please refer to Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. Post a screenshot of that Activity Monitor window, similar to the following, with theCPU tab selected, and the %CPU column sorted in decreasing order:

I have run the Activity Monitor earlier and checked what processes were using a lot of CPU, but nothing really jumped out. Will try it again. I'll also read the post you suggested.

As far as the indexing I installed Sierra on 9/20/16 the day it was released and I didn't notice these issue until 9/24/16, so how long would indexing normally take, if that is what is causing the problem?

Like I mentioned to Kappy, I think Sierra is the cause of these issues and hopefully Apple will be releasing a fix shortly.

Thanks,

Sal
