Q: Iomega Portable Hard Disc now not appearing under 'Devices' after USB cable accidently removed.USB

My Iomega eGo Portable Hard Disc was connected by USB cable to my Macbook Pro OSX 10.9.5 and I was transferring my iPhoto file.  Unfortunately, the cable dropped out and I received a message on my laptop that the hard disc had not been ejected properly.   I reconnected the cable, but now it does not appear under devices on the finder page.  I also checked disc utilities and it is not there either.  I tried to connect the hard drive to my iMac, but it is not showing in devices on there either.

Although I have been using Macs since they first appeared on the market and can usually work things out, I am finding it increasingly harder with all the new technology.  Everything used to be so easy, one of the great things Mac had over MS-DOS.

If anyone can help I would be most grateful, as I have lots of files on this disc from old Macs and have been using the Iomega to back up my most important files.

MacBook Pro, iOS 10

    The drive may have failed.

    Try different USB cables.

Take out the bare drive from the iOmega enclosure and test it in a known functional enclosure.

    Ciao.

Thank you for your quick response.  I will try a different cable tomorrow before I head out to buy a new hard drive.

I did remove the drive to see if there was anything obvious at fault, after viewing various Iomega videos on You Tube, but the internal of my hard drive differed from those featured.  Excuse my ignorance, but can you please explain what you mean by 'a known functional enclosure', so I can check this out.

You appear to be very knowledgeable, so may I ask another quick question.  I have also been using my hard drive to transfer large updated files from my laptop to my iMac.  Can you suggest the best way I should be doing this without the need for a hard drive.   In the past I used to network all the equipment in my office using a cable system, but I know there must be an easier way to do it these days.  I think some of the items I transfer may be too large for file sharing.

    Thanks again for your help.

p.s.  One thing I meant to include in my original request for help, is that the hard drive does make a spinning sound for some time when it is first connected to my lap, but then becomes silent.

A 'known functional enclosure' is one that you know for certain that works.  Connect it to the MBP and see if it is properly recognized.  If so, take out the HDD and swap in the HDD from the iOmega enclosure.

To transfer data from one Mac to another Mac, Target Disk Mode is your best option:
