Solution - External Hard Drives Not Recognized By El Capitan OSX

I just found in the Mac Rumors site a solution to a problem when USB external hard drives are not recognized by

the El Capitan OSX operating system. I have a Buffalo brand USB 2.0 (2 TB) External Hard Drive. Hopefully this will work for everyone until Apple can fix this glitch. Here's the instructions that helped me. They're odd instructions, so bear with them. It's from a British user from October 4, 2015. I included the URL to this helpful Mac Rumor entry as well.

Here's the solution by the British user:

"I asked Apple. They suggested an 'smc reset'. Switch off your computer. Remove all peripherals, including keyboard, screens and power cable. Push the power button for 5 seconds (note: when there is no power!). Switch on: my hard disks appeared!"
