macOS 10.12 Sierra and Mail 10: smart mailbox not working

Hi folks,

after macOS 10.12 Sierra update the Mail 10.0 smart mailboxes don't work anymore.

Case: Create a smart mailbox that displays all messages (inbox, sent, archive, etc.)

The smart mailbox selections see below:

User uploaded file

In OS X 10.11 El Capitan: all messages have been selected correctly

In macOS 10.12 Sierra: only old messages before update date are selected.

What has been tried out to fix: delete smart mailbox and re-create from scratch > to no avail.

thanks for helping out.

I had the same issue. No matter what I tried, Smart Mailboxes were not displaying anything.

It occurred to me that I had shut off indexing to reduce wear and tear on my SSD. As soon as I turned indexing back on, voila! You can adjust indexing from terminal, or if you'd prefer a point and click GUI solution, download OnyX and look on the Parameters then Misc tab for indexing options.

Hi folks,

update: the indexing service (mdworker) runs initially for a very long time. Afterwards indexing starts regularly after each system startup.

My take on this is: if you use the new storage management feature called Storage Management (Macintosh HD/System/Library/Core Services/Applications) that allows for allocating older files to be automatically uploaded to iCloud while more recent content remains on your HD. This of course is also true for mailboxes. So if you have mailboxes loaded with a couple of GBs Storage Management supposedly checks what can be uploaded to iCloud and what remains locally on your HD.

This explained it to me and solved my issue.

Hope this helps.

Hi Russel,

sorry for the late reply. Find below the storage configuration I used at the time.

But in addition I found that another hint could have helped my issue described in this conversation: Mail attachments on Sierra

Here the mail attachments folder is deleted and is later being rebuilt by macOS later. So should you have a couple of mails be prepared for some indexing (mdsworker, etc.). In addition, should you use the Mail app plugin MailTags by SmallCubed then check that you have the latest version. I discussed an issue with them and following a prefix forwarded by them I see an improvement to this issue.

Hope this helped.
