On new iPhone 7, screen lights up on movement - is this normal?

I have just bought an iPhone 7. Every time I pick it up the screen lights up before I hit the home button. Is this normal?

I presume when I am carrying it, it will keep on lighting up and then going off.

Sounds like you are using Nightshift under display and brightness. I have mine so it is a lower light setting starting at 6 pm. Just go into settings, Display and Brightness and it should be the second one down. You can turn it off by clicking on the Nightshift arrow or custom it for times you would like it too go dimmer or brighter.

I love the feature, I accidentally turn mine off but didn’t notice it till I ran my iPhone over with my car! Thank God I have a good military case, no damage.

Yes, this is a new iOS 10 feature called "Raise to Wake", where you can check notifications on the lockscreen without hitting the power button or home button. I'm not sure if I like it or not myself but I currently still have it enabled.

To turn this off, go to Settings, Display & Brightness, and toggle Raise to Wake OFF.

I've played around with it a bit and it mostly activates when moved from horizontal to vertical (e.g. picking it up from laying on a desk), but not from say, low vertical to high vertical. So depending on how you carry the phone (pants pocket, jacket pocket, holster, backpack, etc.), it may or may not light up unintentionally.
