Q: Since upgrading to macOS Sierra, optical drive (superdrive) doesn't read disks

If you can't that would rule out a software problem since OSX is not loaded for booting.
Try using a CD/DVD cleaning disk.
If it can't boot that would point to a hardware problem with the dfive.
If it boots with install DVD:
- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

- Try starting in Safe Mode

- If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

And I will try the cleaning disk: will need to buy one of those.
What puzzles me is that I was using a CD till the upgrade to Sierra and the drive was working fine. It's a strange coincidence that it's not functioning anymore since then. I wonder if anyone else experiences this... But I will keep you posted. Thanks again for your help.

Oct 12, 2016 6:12 PMby packetman,The same thing has happened to me except that I cannot even open the drive door anymore. I opened "About this Mac" and it doesn't even show the DVD drive anymore. I can start "DVD Player" application and I get "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]"
