Sep 26, 2016 7:36 AM in response to joanabeeby Kurt Lang,It is extremely unlikely to have anything to do with malware. A hardware issue should be your first concern. However, you haven't provided anywhere near enough detail to make a useful suggestion.
Since a flashing screen (of what image?) isn't normal for any kind of startup, it sounds like the video hardware is on the fritz. Could be the onboard video, a bad cable, or other video related hardware.
Try this. Restart (force shut down the iMac first by holding down the power button if necessary). Immediately after turning the iMac back on, hold down the Shift key. This will cause the iMac to boot into Safe Mode. What do you get doing that, if anything?

Sep 26, 2016 7:40 AM in response to joanabeeby Csound1,Malware that stops the computer from booting would not be useful to the perpetrators at all, I doubt that it is malware that caused this. Follow Kurts advice
