Q: Does Sierra retain iPhoto?

Im looking to update my 2012 Macbook Pro from Yosemite to Sierra, but I need to be reassured that my iPhoto will be retained as I'm not a fan of Photos.

Can anyone confirm whether Sierra retains or deletes iPhoto please?

Thanks

It does not, do you have an up to date (9.6.1) version of iPhoto?

    I have iPhoto 9.6.1

So are you saying that Sierra will delete my iPhoto and transfer it to Photos? If so I think I'll stay with Yosemite.

iPhoto by all accounts still works, but who knows for how long.

Photos in Sierra has a bunch of new great features like Memories, and a lot intelligent searches.

Don't let a negative first impression prevent you from taking a fresh look at Photos. It is getting better and better, and, as I said, you can't be sure when iPhoto will break. It is clear that it will never be updated again, so it is a matter of when, not if.

Works for me on Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra. but give Photos another go.

Sorry Csound1, I wasn't sure if you were confirming whether it does or doesn't retain iPhoto. Looks like I'm safe to upgrade, though I realise I will have to move to Photos at some point in the future.

When I first tried Photos with Yosemite I didn't like it, iPhoto does everything I need perfectly - keyword/date searches etc. If I do move to Photos will my photo library be doubled in size due to it being in both iPhoto and Photos?

    Thanks all.

It does not keep or contain iPhoto, you will need to download it again (or backup and restore it) version 9.6.1 will work for now. The future is uncertain, and there will be no support.

    Let me clarify.

If you install over a system that has iPhoto in it, the Sierra installer does NOT delete iPhoto.

Of course, it does not contain iPhoto either, so a clean install will not include it, but if the OP downloads and install Sierra on his system iPhoto will still be there and work on Sierra.

Yes, if iPhoto is already installed it will stay that way, if not it will also stay that way but can be downloaded if required.

If you don't like Photos, you may want to start looking for

other alternatives to iPhoto because as others have said it

will likely not continue working forever.

Just Google or Bing "iPhoto alternatives" and try some of them out

(almost all have some sort of demo or trial period).

Yes, but has the broken Flickr integration in Photos been fixed on Sierra? Apple did not do it on any other release with Photos in, so I'd be surprised, (but pleased) if they did. The ONLY reason I still use iPhoto is for the integration with Flickr, which Apple steered me to when they withdrew the excellent Mobile Me Galleries and said they were not in the photo hosting business…

Photos makes it very hard to post photos in Flickr albums, for example, titles and descriptions are lost, and only 30 photos at a time can be uploaded instead of a whole album of maybe 200.

There are many complaints on the web; these are just a representative couple:
