Oct 7, 2016 2:31 PM in response to MacBookBearby Barney-15E,Will this retain my iPhoto library so I can carry on using it, whilst copying it over to Photos for future use?
Yes, but it is not making a duplicate of your Library, so it won't be using twice the space. The only extra storage is from creating the database that indexes the image files and other small files required to manage the library.

Oct 8, 2016 7:57 AM in response to John Galtby Gale002,John, I have not enjoyed using photos so far but am prepared to give it a go - my worry is that I have well over 20k photos in iPhoto. Do I have to be connected to the internet to download my libraries from iPhoto to photos? We are on satellite broadband and only have a limited amount of data transferal I can use? I have time machine and my computer is backed up regularly. I also have a relatively new iMac ( Late 2015) 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3.

Oct 8, 2016 8:03 AM in response to Csound1by Gale002,I do not use the online storage at the moment for that reason. I wanted to know if transferring my photo libraries from iPhoto to Photos would need an internet connection to do it. If it is just an internal process that is no problem currently all my photos are on my computer and my backup disc (Time Machine).

Oct 8, 2016 8:09 AM in response to Csound1by Gale002,Many thanks - will I get a prompt to transfer the libraries or do I have to do it manually and if so how?

Oct 8, 2016 8:13 AM in response to Gale002by MacBookBear,I didn't get any prompts when upgrading to Sierra. But when I originally upgraded to Yosemite I did get a prompt to bring my iPhoto library across to Photos, which I did. But I didn't like Photos so I deleted its content and went back to iPhoto.
Now I'm on Sierra, I can go to Lanchpad and click on Photos, and it prompts me to bring my library back across. Haven't done it yet though.

Oct 8, 2016 8:24 AM in response to Gale002by John Galt,An Internet connection is only required if you use iCloud Photo Library. That choice can be found in Photos' Preferences > iCloud.
The conversion and analysis does not require an Internet connection. Expect one full day to finish analyzing 20,000 photos.
