Q: El Capitan does not recognise my Admin password after install.

Downloaded El Capitan. Install completes but then unable to access as will not accept my admin. password.

Admin password checked by using it to unlock various items in Settings before undertaking Capitan download and install. Has anyone come across this before and knows how to solve this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

So you were successfully able to download and install El Capitan. You can also successfully use the admin password to unlock items in Settings (I think you mean System Preferences). So exactly what isn't working?

Thanks but not quite. I was able to confirm my Admin password was correct in "System preferences" before I started the OSX upgrade. After the successful download and install of El Capitan, I couldn't proceed any further as my admin password was called for but would not work.

Do you mean that the Mac boots up, but you cannot log in?

Could you be using a different keyboard layout that is remapping a character in your password to a different key?

Thank you. Yes its booted up but I'm unable to log in using my admin password. I have had a look as a guest but that's not much good! I take your point about keyboard but don't understand how that could be as I certainly have not reassigned any keys. Incidentally, I don't usually require a password on log in in normal use but I can't seem to escape it after new OSX install. I have now reverted to Mavericks again via my TimeMachine backup (its the third time I've tried to update the OSX) but I would like to solve this if possible.

If it happens again, try resetting the password: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21765

Have you tried your Appple ID pasword instead of your admin pasword ?

Thanks to you both. I did reset my admin password before my last attempt - also ticking the "use AppleID option" too.

However, I must admit I forgot to try my AppleID password at that last attempt. I will give it a try when I attempt the upgrade again. Unfortunately that won't be for another week as I am going away. Many thanks to you both for your help and interest.
