GPS issue running Nike Run Club with Apple watch series 2

I have my Apple Watch 2 setup with the Nike Run Club app. On numerous occasions I have tried to run without my iPhone (6 running 10.0.2) and for some reason the GPS does not appear to be working. While I can log runs, the pace/time is completely off and it's not capturing GPS data as the maps don't appear in the app once I log and submit the run. Also, I would assume the GPS isn't working since the pace is so far off. It seems to me it's logging the runs using the accelerometer which hasn't yet been calibrated as I want to be able to log the runs using GPS. I need help. Has anyone else had the same using while trying to use this app? I bought the watch to replace an old Nike+ band, in the hopes I could run without the phone, but it's been an uphill battle making it work. Has the Nike Run Club app not yet been updated to fully utilize GPS data from the Apple Watch?

Hi

You may find it helpful to consult Nike's support resources and/or to contact Nike for assistance with using their app:

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for the above contact info. Just last week I spent about 1/2 hour on the phone with Nike tech support and they were unable to help me, so they punted me to Apple support and after the same time the result was the same. I'm at a loss as to what the issue might be and really wanted to find out if other users were experiencing the same thing. Not sure where to go at this point. Perhaps the Genius bar?

I have found this thread after my first run using Nike+RunClub on the Apple Watch Series 2 (and no iPhone around) and noticing there is no route info either in the Nike+RunClub nor in the Workouts app.

For the last few days I've used the Workouts app to track my walks and the route info/map is available in there. But those times I had my iPhone with me, so it's hard to say if this confirms the GPS works or not.

On the other hand, while looking around the Nike+RunClub app trying to figure out if I left out some setting, I've noticed a popup (click account icon on top left -> settings -> run settings -> apple watch):

Leave your iPhone behind and run with Apple Watch to track your distance and pace.

Run with your iPhone and Apple Watch to use GPS to track your route.

Hi

Picked up series 2 a few days ago. I have the exact same problem but I am picking up no gps data in the workout app either?! This is infuriating to say the least as I held off buying an original iwatch due to a lack of gps! The Nike app is just recording data from the motion and no gps data. The lack of other comments across the web about this makes me assume it's a simple problem/setting that I haven't found. Seriously contemplating returning watch and sticking with the Fitbit which is so so straightforward and has a better clearer app in my opinion. Really only wanted this now for wireless music and Gps data with just watch and headphones, leaving phone at home.

I just tested today if the Workout app would pick up GPS data when the iPhone is not around. I can confirm back that after completing a walk (with the watch only and no iPhone), the Workout app on the iPhone correctly pulled in the data and showed the accurate map of my walk.

On the Nike side, one hypothesis I have is that this might have been premature marketing. Nike might be holding off on an updated app for the release of their branded Apple Watch.

The other hypothesis is that 3rd party apps do not have access to GPS data. I'm not sure how to test this though, but it would be very unfortunate.

Hi a8p6

Your theory does seem likely but Greydog stated he was on the phone to Nike for a while trying to sort the problem out, which leads me to believe that it should be working? Surely they would have just told him it wasn't live yet.

After lots of short strange walks around the neighbourhood last night I am fast coming to the conclusion I will return this. When using the workout app last night, half of the runs/walks didn't even show on my phone when ended, let alone with GPS data!

Maybe I should have researched more before buying, but was hoping to use this with Strava, and maybe the Nike app as it seemed like a fresh launch and would be worth revisiting, but Strava aren't even using the watch GPS yet, so currently I have a watch that doesn't really do much as all for me!

I had no intentions to dismiss that piece, only assumed a possible lack of internal info at Nike (this might actually happen if the company went public about their partnership with Apple on the series 2).

I'll do another test tomorrow for the Nike+RunClub app as there is something nagging me: when I updated to Nike+RunClub the first run I did, with the iPhone at that time, led to the same lack of GPS data (at least based on the type of visualization used by the app).

The following steps may help:

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, check that:
    • Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
    • Nike+ Run Club is set to While Using.
  • If each setting is already enabled:
    • Briefly turn off Location Services (the main setting) and then turn it back on again.
    • Briefly change the setting for each of Apple Watch Workout and Nike+ Run Club to Never and then back to While Using.

Check the app's data sharing permissions:

  • On your iPhone, in the Health app: go to Sources (tab) > Nike + Run Club > check that all options are enabled.

Before starting a run, check that the Nike+ Run Club app is in Outdoor mode:

  • On your watch, in the app: swipe to the leftmost screen > turn off Indoor.

If that does not immediately help, next close all open apps and restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch:

Hey all,

After multiple discussions with Apple and the initial discussion with Nike, Nike finally emailed me a response. This is it:

"Thanks for contacting Nike App & Device Support regarding your issue using your Apple Watch Series 2 to record your GPS runs by itself.

Unfortunately, the GPS function on the Nike+ Apple Watch Series 2 is not currently available in the Nike+ Run Club app, but it will be in a future update. Stay tuned by following @Nike on Twitter, or check back with us, after our next update."

So the speculation that they aren't actually utilizing the GPS functionality in this version of the app would be correct. My guess is the same as yours. They aren't being transparent about it until they release the Nike watch with the fully functional software. As for a date, they didn't supply me with one.

On a related note, I have yet to log a run without the phone as just about the time I submit the run using the Nike app it crashes and it's not recorded. The app is garbage and totally useless without the phone. I'm also thinking about returning the watch as the GPS functionality running the Nike app sold me. I just assumed the Nike app was compatible. Anyhow, hope that helps. At the end of the day Nike should just be straightforward about the status of the app release and the fact that it's not using the GPS. It took me weeks to finally get the answer I've been looking for.

Thanks for the info Greydog, sounds like we are both in the same predicament.

I just assumed NRC was live as hadn't found any info to suggest otherwise. Lots of bad feedback since Nike changed the App, which hopefully will improve. I was always Garmin/Strava but my last Garmin broke and was using my phone for a while, and a Fitbit and lots of people I know liked the Nike Plus app so was ready to move over. I just really hate taking the phone running.

Ultimately I wanted music via wireless headphones minus the phone. The iWatch with GPS seemed like an expensive answer, but told myself all the other bits and pieces on the phone would be useful (which they may turn out to be). Bit frustrating at present though as got to wait for the app to be updated. The apple workout app would be fine if it exported to Strava like so many other apps do.

Going to have to decide in the next couple of days if I keep the iWatch or not...Favouring keeping it currently based on the fact the functionality I want is coming....At some point....

Thanks to everyone for there assistance trying to help...I joined the forums for this problem alone and found some very helpful people!

@Maverick750 after reading the 3 years old thread on Fitbit forums, with tons of +1s, about the lack of integration with the Health data source, I'm not sure anymore if I should be expecting such integrations or simply consider the Nike one as the exception. On my side I decided I'll make the final call related to keeping or returning the watch based only on my experience and what works right now.

Oct 10, 2016 12:29 PM in response to GreyDog00

@Maverick750- I joined the forums for the same reason, so I'm glad to hear the issue was resolved and that I wasn't the only one looking for answers. We are most definitely in the same predicament.

I've been using a Nike Plus sport watch for years now and this seemed to be a great solution for a replacement and the biggest selling point was not having to bring the phone. I'm just hopeful the app update is launched with the Nike watch in a few weeks. And, it's too bad the apple workout app isn't compatible with Strava. I would think that feature would be a huge selling point for many and if integrated might tip them in Apple's favor. Seems like a win win.

I think I'll be keeping my watch too, but in the hopes they straighten this out shortly.

Appreciate the back and forth with you and @a8ps. I was certain I was the only one with this issue and it's good to know I'm not alone. Cheers to the app update- hopefully soon.
