Q: Personal Hotspot is off on my iPhone, yet it still shows up on my computer?

Hi everyone,

I have an iPhone 6 and a Macbook Air.

I noticed today when I went to connect to wifi on my Macbook Air that there was a connection under "Personal Hotspots" labelled "Julia's iPhone 6." I quickly checked my phone to see if I'd accidentally set up a personal hotspot, but the switch was set to off. I thought that maybe there happened to be someone nearby who had the same name as me and the same type of iPhone, so I tried changing the name of my phone in my phone's settings. I checked my laptop again, and my name had changed on there as well, so it is in fact coming from my phone.

Now I am concerned - why is my iPhone still showing up as a personal hotspot on my laptop, even though I had never turned on personal hotspot in the first place? Can other people see it and connect to it as well? Will it cost me on my cell phone bill? (I know in the past one of my family members had personal hotspot turned on for quite a while and the cell phone bill had well over a hundred dollars on it.)

I do have bluetooth turned on on my phone, but I've never paired it with my laptop as per the instructions under the "Personal Hotspot" tab in settings.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so very much for all of your help.

    Turn off bluetooth.
