My wife has the original apple watch. She uses the friends feature (side scroll) to add friends for quick access. I just bought series 1 watch and i dont have that feature? Has that been removed? if not, how do i get it on my series 1 watch?

Under watchOS 3, the Friends feature (which was available under prior versions) is no longer included and there is no direct replacement for it.
When placing calls or sending new messages, contacts can instead be selected via the Phone and Messages apps or by using Siri:

Recently Apple has released WatchOS 3, which came with your watch. The friends feature was removed to integrate the 'recents' feature. Unless your wife is deeply attached to the friends feature, I would urge her to update as well by going to the apple watch app on her phone and scrolling down to general. From there, simply click software update and you're all set. just make sure the apple watch is at least 50% charged and on it's charging dock.
