Q: Fan running all the time because xinetd running over 80% all the time.  Anyone else have the same problem?

xinetd is running at 83% or more 24 x 7 eating up battery in 2 hours or less and making the fan run all the time.  I logged a bug report and it turns out it was a duplicate because someone else had the same issue.  However, I have no access to the other bug report nor can I find anything in the discussion forums or online.  Anyone else experience this issue?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12)

    Hello gorgonzola1111,

I doubt anyone else has this problem because xinetd isn't part of macOS. Did you install it from some 3rd party "ports" package?

Not as far as I know.  I removed it, restarted and the problem is gone.  Everything seems to be working properly now.  A search of other files created on the same date did not return any clues so I have no idea where it came from.

    Thank you.

I'm still curious about where it came from. That is a low-level utility from UNIX.

I am too.  When I reported it to Apple in the bug reporter, they never said anything about it, just asked for a copy to check the version number and a copy of the file.  Never heard anything else.  I checked the config file and there are no hints as to what might have installed it.  I did some further checking to try to find other files installed at the same time and I also found tcpmux.  But that was it.  Nothing else.  File activity around that date seems to be normal otherwise.  Wonder if it was from an old software install that I subsequently deleted.  I removed tcpmux as well.  It was not listed in the activity monitor.  If you have any ideas, I am all ears.

Mystery solved.  It turns out that xinetd and tcpmux are both installed by a RIP I use called ImagePrint.  Why they use them, I do not know.  I did an update today for Sierra compatibility and it reinstalled both of them.

    Thanks again for your help.

First you have to locate the file.  I found it in /usr/local/bin.  In my case, it was a third party piece of software that installed it so I had to search for it.  I used sudo find / -type f -name xinetd.  This told me where it was and also where the xinetd.d directory was with the config file.

After locating the files, I removed them and the software I am using still seems to be working fine.  I am not sure what they are using it for.  I will try their SIerra compatible update to see if they fixed the issue.
